Following the familiar, easy-to-use at a Glance format, and now in full-colour, Surgery at a Glance is an accessible introduction and revision text for medical students. Fully revised and updated, this at a Glance provides a user-friendly overview of surgery to encapsulate all that the student needs to know.

This new edition of Surgery at a Glance:

  • Is presented in full colour format for ease of use
  • Focuses on the core principles and the important diseases appropriate to the current curriculum
  • Features extended coverage of anaesthesia and paediatric surgery
  • Divides the ‘Paediatric surgery’ chapter into two new chapters to feature infantile pyloric stenosis, intussusception and malrotation of the gut
  • Reflects the latest practice, e.g. new therapies for varicose veins resection
  • Includes more practical information in the Presentations section on specifically ward-based topics

Surgery at a Glance is an invaluable resource for all clinical medical students, junior doctors, and surgical nurses.

Reviews of the previous edition

"‘This book is ideal for finals as diagrams help the revision numbed mind to retain information. It is extremely quick and easy to read and the list-based information is an ideal basis for short-answer questions." Barts and the London Chronicle

"Delightful book… the quality of the diagrams is such that for the majority of topics the text is almost superfluous." British Journal of Surgery

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“Although this book is intended for surgical residents (and some may find it useful), it is most appropriate for third- and fourth-year medical students (such as those doing sub-internships). It would be a valuable addition to other books that are standard for this demographic (e.g., Surgical Recall, 6th edition, Blackbourne (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2012).” (Doody’s, 21 March 2014)

“Surgery at a Glance deserves ongoing recommendation as it appears in an updated new fifth edition to provide students with a summary of a comprehensive lecture course in surgery. It's arranged in an 'at a glance' format, which provides quick visuals and easy keys to understanding, with key facts supplementing discussions of major surgical conditions. New chapters on Orthopaedics, updates on post-surgery management, and a website packed with supportive resources to the text makes for a volume filled with important insights any student will find important.” (Midwest Book Review, 1 December 2013)

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: James De Andrade, MD (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: This introduction to general surgery and its subspecialties describes the field with a combination of clear art and minimalist text. It is accompanied by a website of MCQs and other additional resources.
Purpose: "The purpose is to briefly cover important fundamental concepts in general surgery for those who may not have significant prior knowledge in this area. The book succeeds in introducing the field to this audience. "
Audience: The authors intend this book for new residents and others wanting an introduction to general surgery, but the book is most suitable for third- and fourth-year medical students who are interested in general surgery as a career. It also could be useful to nurse practitioners and physician assistants who are getting involved in the care of general surgery patients. Although the authors are from the U.K, the approach they take is universal, rather than specific to the U.K.
Features: The book is divided into two parts, "Clinical Presentations at a Glance" (which includes topics such as "neck lump," "leg ulceration," etc.) and "Surgical Diseases at a Glance" (which is organized by diagnosis or category of disease). It uses multiple illustrations to give readers a concrete understanding of what can be abstract ideas or difficult-to-understand structures (such as anatomy). The particular strength of this book lies in the clarity with which it explains concepts that may be baffling to neophytes, but which are taken for granted (and hence not explained) in other books. A two-page format is used, with a composite illustration on the left page and bulleted text on the right. Each of the 87 such spreads covers a simple but important concept. For example, the one on scrotal swellings takes readers through a clearly illustrated diagnostic algorithm. Information is primarily conveyed by this illustration and is supplemented by the text, which begins with key points and works through differential diagnosis, to end in key investigations.
Assessment: Although this book is intended for surgical residents (and some may find it useful), it is most appropriate for third- and fourth-year medical students (such as those doing sub-internships). It would be a valuable addition to other books that are standard for this demographic (e.g., Surgical Recall, 6th edition, Blackbourne (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2012)).
