Editorial Reviews

David J. Dries
This is the fourth edition of a five-volume text reviewing surgery of the gastrointestinal system. The authors have produced a review of the basic science and clinical management of gastrointestinal problems. The book is a standard in its fourth edition since 1955. This work is for the practicing surgeon, academician, trainee, or student of gastrointestinal surgery. The authors and contributors represent leaders in American gastrointestinal surgery. This handsomely bound set of books is divided into five volumes by subject matter. Volumes cover the course of the alimentary tract and discuss closely related topics including liver, pancreas, spleen, and hernia. Each volume is a text of its own. Contributors for a volume are listed with affiliations in the front pages followed by the table of contents for the whole set. Chapters describing each subject are placed in groups designed to stand alone. Each volume concludes with a detailed index that includes separate citations for tables reviewing the content of that volume. Chapters are well written and contain original work dating to within three years of publication. The table of contents is brief but subject headings in each chapter are well indicated. Illustrations are black-and-white and of adequate quality. In some cases, contrast and detail are lost. This book presents each anatomic region with pertinent anatomy, physiology and embryology followed by diagnostic studies, operative procedures, and treatment for benign and malignant disease. Although such an approach allows content overlap among chapters, the book is in fact tightly organized. Although cost may limit ownership of this set to practicing surgeons, it belongs onthe shelf of medical libraries supporting surgical departments.
