Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Andrew Sherman, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This book discusses in detail the current topics in gastrointestinal surgery of the upper and mid-GI tract. It describes the history, anatomy, physiology, and surgical procedures of the various organ systems in a complete fashion. This is the fifth edition of the book, the last published in 1986. This new version is expanded to include chapters on the esophagus and small intestine.
Purpose: The authors' purpose is to foster the scientific aspects of surgery while reporting clinical methods and results. The authors also make an attempt to include more of the international contributors to the development of gastrointestinal surgery. These objectives are worthy and largely met.
Audience: The book is written for experts in the field of gastrointestinal surgery. It is also to be used as a reference source for the trainee surgeon and physician seeking information about a particular subject. The authors are leading authorities in their respective fields.
Features: The book has extensive illustrations, tables and descriptions of surgical procedures which are very helpful to the reader. The book contains as complete a list of references as could be compiled on the various subjects. The table of contents and index are quite adequate and the book is very neatly laid out. A unique feature is the '"special comments" section at the end of most chapters.
Assessment: This is an excellent reference source for the fields of surgery concerning the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. It discusses, in detail, almost all aspects of the surgical care of the three organ systems. The fifth edition is expanded to include the esophagus and small intestine and is therefore necessary to replace the previous edition. This book is highly recommended for a bookstore and library to stock.

    this is a outstanding book.

This book makes me happy. I'd like to recommend to general surgeons, who have an interest in upper gastrointestinal tract surgery. Now I'm waiting for 6th edition.
