Editorial Reviews

Isaac Samuel
This is a comprehensive book on surgical diseases of the pancreas. The purpose is to present authoritative and up-to-date accounts of the diagnosis and treatment of surgical diseases of the pancreas. Despite its title, the audience for this book is not restricted to general and gastrointestinal surgeons. This book covers a wide spectrum of topics that are of interest to all physicians dealing with problems pertaining to pancreatic disease management, both in clinical practice and research. In addition to excellent accounts on inflammatory, neoplastic, traumatic, and congenital diseases of the pancreas, this book contains chapters on state-of-the-art diagnostic modalities such as endoscopic and intraoperative ultrasonography, percutaneous and intraoperative fine-needle aspiration cytology, CT and MRI. Detailed descriptions of operative surgical technique are provided. Attention is also paid to topics such as history, surgical anatomy and physiology, pancreatic transplantation, anesthesia, pain relief, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. This is an excellent, well-illustrated, and well-referenced book. The contributors are from nine different countries and are all well established authorities in the realm of pancreatic disease. The information presented is wide-ranging and up-to-date and is of use to physicians from several clinical disciplines. In the challenging field of diagnosis, treatment, and research of surgical diseases of the pancreas, this thorough compendium of current concepts is a welcome contribution.

This book is a very complete study of the surgical aspects of pancreatic disease. It covers both benign and malignant, as well as acute and chronic, processes. Its main focus is on the surgical treatment of pancreatic disease, although it does cover some of the medical aspects of treatment, particularly as they pertain to malignant pancreatic disease. The purpose is to cover all aspects of surgical pancreatic disease. The editors do a very complete job of meeting this objective. The book is primarily targeted at the practitioner, particularly those general surgeons with an interest and focus in pancreatic disease. It would also be an appropriate text for upper level general surgery residents. The editors and contributors are all experts in this relatively complex area of general surgery. The quality of the radiologic illustrations is quite excellent. The text could be improved with the addition of some color illustrations, particularly histological and endoscopic illustrations. The references are current and pertinent. This is an excellent and very complete text that covers a difficult and complex area of general surgery. It is very appropriate for practicing general surgeons with an interest in pancreatic disease, as well as for upper level general surgery residents. Since this is a highly specialized area, it will be of interest to a limited population. This would be an excellent reference for a library. Bookstores should only carry a limited quantity.
