Description: This is the second edition of a book designed to aid the surgical house officer on call.
Purpose: The author sets out to provide a unique tool for the house officer. Information is organized according to problems as they are presented to the house officer on call, rather than as already established diagnoses. This is useful in providing an initial approach to these problems, which can sometimes be difficult to extract from standard texts with more traditional formats. However, many situations will require more extensive information found in these standard texts.
Audience: The book is written for surgical house officers. It is most appropriate for those with limited patient care experience, such as fourth-year medical students and beginning residents. More senior level residents will find its content less useful.
Features: This book is small, making it convenient to carry in a lab coat pocket. It covers many problems a beginning resident will be called to assess. The table of contents and large index provide quick access to the information. Practical instruction on basic procedures, complete with pertinent illustrations is provided, as is a reference section on medications.
Assessment: This book's unique format may be helpful to the first- or second-year surgery resident by providing an initial approach to common problems. Its limited scope will necessitate further reading from other sources in many instances and renders it less useful to more experienced house staff.
