Reviewer: Edward Abraham, M.D.(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is the second edition of a book that deals with the different surgical techniques spine surgeons use to get from the skin to the surgical site on the spine.
Purpose: The purpose is to give a step-by-step description of all the different surgical approaches to the spine with the emphasis on surgical anatomy to avoid complications and to improve outcomes. To this end, the objectives are fully met. The editor, Robert G. Watkins, professor of clinical orthopedic surgery at University of Southern California and Co-director of the Los Angeles Spine Surgery Institute at St. Vincent's Hospital in Los Angeles, is fully qualified to write on this important area of the body.
Audience: The audience is mainly spine surgeons. Other professionals involved in treating the spine may benefit from its contents.
Features: This second edition builds on the first by including surgical approaches for advanced and complicated procedures. New chapters include approaches to cervicothoracic spine, sacrum, pelvis and anterior clivus of c1-c2. Also, exposure for a total vertebrectomy is presented. Each chapter is supported by illustrations and labeled, intraoperative color photos both of which are of excellent quality. Important anatomical landmarks are illustrated and discussed in some detail. The references are few, but current and relevant. The detailed steps of each surgical approach are carefully presented.
Assessment: This is an important contribution to this highly specialized field of spine surgery. Potential complications associated with this kind of surgery can be devastating to the patient. The authors have done an excellent job of presenting the material in order to minimize the chances of injury to adjacent structures. I highly recommended this work to all spine surgeons.
