Overview

Surgical dermatology is a growing field reflecting the increasing incidence of photodamage and sun-related tumors, whether benign or malignant. These diseases require expert pathological diagnosis -- sometimes interoperatively -- and therefore all it is important to learn not only techniques of lesion removal, but also specimen preparation and histological appearance. Surgical dermatology covers the gamut of surgical skin lesions, clinical features, histologic subtypes, frozen section and permanent section interpretation, and differential diagnosis. Normal variants are covered in depth. Laboratory techniques for frozen, permanent and MOHS fixed tissue preparation are given. There is a very useful section on artifacts and margin control, both of which have important practical implications. Because other dermatopathology texts cover all dermatologic diseases, they do not focus in such depth on the particular problems of technique and recognition proposed by dermatosurgical specimens.

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations.

Description: This book is a compendium of dermatopathology that covers a large number of common and some less common entities in dermatopathology. It is divided in two parts. The first deals with technical issues relating to the practice of dermatopathology, while the second deals with clinical issues. Because of this wide scope, most of the diseases are covered rather superficially.
Purpose: According to the editors, the main aim is to help improve the management of patients with skin cancer. This is a valuable objective that is, unfortunately, only partially achieved by this work.
Audience: This book is addressed to Moh's surgeons and residents in dermatology. The authors are recognized experts in the area of Moh's surgery.
Features: The book first covers the tactical and administrative aspects involved in running a histopathology laboratory. The second part of the book is devoted to covering a wide spectrum of neoplasms of the skin, including basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, adnexal neoplasms, melanomas, sarcomas, and other miscellaneous tumors. Many of these sections are incomplete and poorly organized. Although there are some good pictures, especially those in color, the photographic material of this book leaves much to be desired.
Assessment: The most valuable part of this book is the area that deals with technical issues; there are no other books that deal with these subjects. It will be helpful to residents in dermatology and to Moh's fellows and practitioners to become familiar with all the material and equipment, as well as the techniques that are necessary to start and to run a histopathology laboratory. It will also help them comply with the regulations that govern the functioning of these laboratories. The second part could serve as a quick reference for some of the neoplasms; however, it is obvious that for the serious student learning about the different neoplasms there are other books better suited for this purpose.
