Reviewer: Cyril Abrahams, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: This book deals with the surgical pathology of nonneoplastic lung disease and covers common and rare lesions seen in a surgical pathology laboratory. There is also a useful chapter on the handling and interpretation of lung biopsies. This is the third edition; the previous editions were published in 1982 and 1990.
Purpose: The purpose is to present to the surgical pathologist practical aspects of pulmonary pathology. These are worthy objectives and they are certainly met. The book has undergone some revisions in format, and there is the addition of some newly described entities, making for improvements over the second edition. If one does not have this book, it is essential to get a copy.
Audience: Although the book is primarily for surgical pathologists, it is also of use for the resident in pathology and for clinicians dealing with pulmonary cases either surgically or medically. The author is one of the leading pulmonary pathologists responsible for putting this important aspect of surgical pathology firmly on the map. Because of her clear descriptions, the author has been responsible for helping diagnostic surgical pathologists in the often-challenging task of elucidating a difficult pulmonary case.
Features: The book is well illustrated, and the current edition shows a remarkable improvement in the layout of the photographs. They have been reduced in size so that more than one photograph occupies a page. This cropping of the photographs does not detract from the value of the illustrations. The only problem that I have is that frequently the figure referred to in the text may be many pages away. Tables vary in format. In most tables, conditions are listed in alphabetical order, but this is not always the case. The references are current and pertinent, and the classical articles on the subject are identified by asterisks. The layout has been markedly improved since the second edition. The text has two columns per page, and the reference numbers are not as spread out as in the second edition. Both changes make for easier reading.
Assessment: There are a number of texts available on lung pathology, but this one rates right up at the top because it is written by an expert whose experience in the practical diagnosis of lung pathology is unique. This book is a "must buy" for those not in possession of a "Katzenstein." Even if you have an earlier edition, and your budget can take it, it is certainly worth purchasing this edition. I would recommend holding onto the second edition because some useful tables and material have been omitted from this third edition for space reasons. The book should be in all libraries and bookstores. I would like to see a copy in all surgical pathology laboratories, where I have no doubt it will be one of the most frequently consulted books.
