Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: John Mark Oscherwitz, M.D.(University of Kansas School of Medicine)
Description: In this comprehensive neuropathology book, the authors cover neoplastic and inflammatory disorders of the brain and spinal cord frequently encountered by the surgical pathologist. The book is very well organized and contains unique diagnostic checklists to aid in the differential diagnosis. The authors have upgraded this fourth edition from the previous edition published in 1991.
Purpose: The authors' purpose is to cover the surgical aspects of neuropathology. There is certainly a place in surgical pathology and neuropathology for such a high quality book. The authors have surpassed their goal with this well-illustrated new edition.
Audience: The intended readers of this book are pathologists, residents and fellows in neuropathology, as well as neurologists, neurosurgeons, and their trainees. The three authors are well known writers and respected experts in the field.
Features: Covered in the book are tumors of the brain, meninges, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves as well as inflammatory and infectious diseases of the nervous system. From astrocytomas to histiocytosis of the skull, the authors have covered the mundane to the rare neuropathologic diagnosis. The first chapter covers diseases involving the skull, such as fibrous dysplasia and Paget's disease. The chapter covering brain tumors is particularly well written. The book is extensively illustrated with top-notch gross and microscopic color photographs, along with excellent electron micrographs and radiographs. The authors have organized the book into clinical, gross, microscopic, immunohistochemical, molecular, radiographic, and differential diagnostic categories which allows for easy referencing. Also included are diagnostic checklists that highlight important conditions to consider in the differential diagnosis and frequent pitfalls to avoid.
Assessment: This is an excellent, well illustrated book for pathologists and clinicians alike. The authors' hard work on this latest edition has resulted in an outstanding book, one of the finest in neuropathology.
