Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Monica Morrow, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This multiauthored book is a review of surgical problems in the cancer patient that occur as a consequence of cancer therapies.
Purpose: The book is designed to serve as a source of information on the diagnosis and management of surgical problems in cancer patients.
Audience: It is directed toward the practicing surgeon and also provides information useful to surgical trainees.
Features: The book does not provide information on the surgical treatment of cancer itself, which is available from multiple other sources. Rather, it focuses on problems secondary to chemotherapy, radiation or progression of cancer that occur both in the abdomen and at extra-abdominal sites. Summaries providing practical information for evaluation and treatment are liberally used for each disease entity that is discussed. Flow charts and tables are also used, making the information readily accessible to the casual reader. The book is liberally illustrated with clinical photographs and radiographs. These are variable in quality.
Assessment: This book is a useful addition to the library of surgeons who deal with cancer patients. It provides a single source for information that is usually scattered in multiple books. The book is well referenced and provides practical suggestions for evaluation and management. The book is also a useful addition to most medical libraries.
