Editorial Reviews

David R. Brenin
This is an interesting and helpful book that contains most of the fundamental information that a third- or fourth-year medical student would be required to know during a surgical clerkship. The book uses the ""Socratic method,"" a question and answer format, that closely resembles the way medical students are evaluated during their surgical rotations. The purpose is to provide concise information that every third- or fourth-year surgical clerk should know. This is a worthy and important objective and the book largely meets it. Because it is targeted specifically to third- and fourth-year medical students, this book would be of little value to any other audience. The authors are credible authorities and have an exact understanding of what their audience wants and needs from this guide. The book contains a small number of black-and-white line drawings, all of which are of good quality. However, I thought that the book is somewhat underillustrated. The index is very helpful and complete. The main feature of this guide is the format, which is conducive to the recall of basic surgical facts. This book will be very useful to its intended audience. It brings together, in a concise manner, most of the information that every third- or-fourth year surgical clerk should know and is presented in a format that closely resembles the way they will be evaluated during their surgical rotations.
From The Critics
The 73 chapters in this study guide and pocket rounds reference review essential information in general surgery and surgical specialties, such as diseases, symptoms, pathophsyiology, and treatments. The left side of each page poses questions with the answers listed on the right. The third edition adds chapters on surgical positions, oncology, and suffixes. Annotation c. A must have for all medical students

This is a very nice review book for the students in surgery. I found it to be the best seller on one of the web sites and now I know why it is so. You can always keep quizing ur self on the go. It includes both basic sugery and subspeciality chapters. I was the first to buy it in my class and now almost 90% of my class is carrying this book around all day.

    Excellent Book . . . With Caution!

This is a great book. As a surgical resident, and once a student, I have yet to put on my lab coat without ensuring that this is in my bottom left pocket. At times when you are overworked, tired, hungry, crabby, have no time to review the anatomy or procedure, a quick review from recall and you shine in front of attendings. And for John E. Travers yes you OR nurses are vital, but please lose the 'senior perioperative clinician' You absolutely have no authority over me, and stop the power trip with the med students, they might employ you one day. Jason Hunter, M.D.

    He says it like is.

Having work with this fine physician this book is a bible for medical students who at time have no common sense and as surgeons at times have no social skills, too. The best line is on the top of page 7 '.. the operating room nurss are selfness warriors of the OR and only arguing with them makes matters worst. I underline that in yellow for medical students at UVA HSS to make them aware as I am a senior perioperative clinican, John E. Travers,M.N.,R.N. aka'Redshoes'

    Best Surgical Book

This book is to the point and cuts to the chase...not really wordy and you don't get lost in the mumbo jumbo of stuff you don't need to know. It covers all of the most pertinent surgery topics and it is easy to read and has related topics together. It is small and can fit in your lab coat and is easy to reference when you need to.

    Excellent

Initially, I used this book as a side book to a small surgical text, then found it to be more useful then the text itself. It was well focused on the high yield topics and frequently asked questions during surgery and on rounds. I recommend it highly to all medical students doing surgery and studying for the USMLE step 2. Kevin Rabey

    Must Have It...

Surgical Recall is must have for the surgery rotation. Almost all the questioned asked from students and residents were very similar and some even exactly the ones that are in the book. This is what I used for my final written and oral exam at the end of my rotation. The book is to the point. Great sub-specialty sections.
