Reviewer: Mark Gonzalez, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is a well-illustrated guide to reconstructive surgical procedures of the upper extremity.
Purpose: It is a comprehensive review for the upper extremity surgeon, the general orthopedics surgeon, and residents and fellows. It is interesting and useful, but it is far from being comprehensive as stated by the editor.
Audience: The book is targeted for dedicated upper extremity surgeons, general orthopedic surgeons, and residents and fellows; in fact, it is more useful for a resident or a general orthopedic surgeon.
Features: Discussion of surgical technique is good, but some rare conditions are given significant space while some common conditions are omitted. This book has detailed chapters on congenital malformations and yet there are only 18 references in the chapter on fractures.
Assessment: This book is intended to be a highly illustrated comprehensive review for residents, fellows, general orthopedic surgeons, and committed upper extremity surgeons, but it only partially meets the stated goals. For example, there are excellent chapters on distal radius fractures, both acute and malunion, but scaphoid fractures are totally omitted from the book. The illustrations are good and the demonstration of techniques is generally useful, but the length and breadth of the text is uneven.
