Description: The six sections in this manageable book address various areas of general surgery and surgical subspecialties. It is unique in that it is appropriate for residents of all levels as well as practicing surgeons. The emphasis throughout is on a concise yet comprehensive review of general surgery that will be useful for the American Board of Surgery In-Service Training Exam (ABSITE) as well as board certification. The third edition has significant changes from previous editions, including updated content and format. A summary of key points begins each chapter and tables, graphs, diagrams are more prominent and seamlessly integrated. The previous edition was published in 2006, thus a third edition with updated references is quite timely.
Purpose: The editors state in the preface that the book provides "the most contemporary, concise, yet comprehensive review of surgery." It is written for a gamut of surgeons ranging from interns to chief residents to those established in practice. The emphasis throughout is on providing surgeons with succinct, high-yield information integrating basic and clinical science that is commonly tested.
Audience: The book is clearly written for surgeons who may be preparing for the ABSITE or board certification. The authors are a mix of residents and professors, making the content appropriate for all surgeons. It is also useful as a reference and is unique in that it is practical to carry in a book bag.
Features: The book is divided into six sections: Body as a Whole, Abdomen and Gastrointestinal Tract, Endocrine System and Oncology, Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems, Trauma, and Surgical Subspecialties. Each section has three to seven chapters brief enough for readers to master the information in short blocks of time. Illustrations, figures, and tables on nearly every page help to break up the paragraphs of text and provide an alternative way to master information. Finally, current suggested readings end each chapter. Written in a readable style, the book is notable for its clear, concise, and clinically relevant content.
Assessment: This is a manageable and helpful book to use while preparing for the ABSITE or board certification. It provides an integrated approach to basic and clinical science with appropriate background and explanations. It is unique in its perfect combination of basic and clinical science review in descriptive, illustrative, and tabular formats.
