Overview

Unplanned pregnancies happen to women in every season of life: the newly married, the never-married, the empty-nester, the teenager, the overworked mother, the career woman. Yet we rarely talk about how lonely and confusing this experience can be.

In Surprise Child, Leslie Leyland Fields, who experienced two unplanned pregnancies in her forties, lyrically weaves her own story with the stories of other women who understand the isolation you face as expectations and plans are turned upside down to make room for a child.

“Each year, more than three million women discover themselves pregnant–at a hard time, the wrong time, at a difficult place in their lives. I am one of those women.…”

Together, these women walk with you month-by-month through the physical and emotional stages of pregnancy, voicing with startling honesty their own anxieties and struggles. Here you will find the companionship and hope you need to journey toward new life.

    Not looking for Religion

While I appreciate people's desire to include God in their every day life, it is not something that I anticipated from the reviews of this book. If you're looking for some straight talk without bringing the lord into what can be a very trying time, then this may not be the book for you. Between that and some anti-abortion (which speaks to me personally as anti-choice), this is a book that I wish that I could return. I am sure that there are others out there who are looking for this, it's just not me.

    There is hope

Another gem of a book by Leslie Leyland Fields. Leslie presents her own and other women's stories of unexpected pregnancy in a sensitive and caring way. She shares with the reader very personal feelings about her experience. This book would be very helpful to others facing the same situation. A must read for any woman! It will give us all a much better understanding of what other women go through when a pregnancy is unplanned. Highly recomemnded!

Honest and raw look at the unexpected

Surpise Child is a fascinating and touching look into unexpected--and unwanted--pregnancy from the 'aisle of embarrassment' through each stage of pregnancy and beyond. Leslie Leyland Fields weaves a variety of stories of real women and her own real thoughts throughout the book. The thoughts are honest, poignant, raw, and rich. I have not had a surprise child but I read the book through in one sitting and found myself loving my children in deeper ways, appreciating the gift of them more. This book is a resource for everyone involved in an unplanned pregnancy--mother, father, grandparents, friends, crisis pregnancy centers. It is a celebration of the hard thing and the joy you find as a result of entering into the surprise child and welcoming them into your situation.

    Wonderful Book

Leslie Leyland Fields did a wonderful job of getting to the heart of what women with unplanned pregnancies think about. I love the way that nothing was 'preached' in the book. Thoughts and negative feelings about unplanned pregnancies are normal, but yet, you're not 'supposed' to think that way, and it's unheard of to speak about. It's nice that this book sheds light on this and lets women know that it's okay.
