The Surprise Party (Rip Squeak Series)by Lee Cohen
Rip Squeak and his friends prepare for a surprise party for Mom and Dad. It becomes an adventure they will never forget.
Children's Literature - Mary Hynes-BerrySeveral years ago the husband and wife team of Susan Yost-Filgate and Leonard Filgate created a family of mice who are friends with a cat named Abby and a frog named Euripides. In this latest tale, the actual writing and illustration have been turned over to Cohen and De Neuville. As this story opens, Jesse and Rip Squeak, the mice children youngsters are planning a surprise party for their parents, Abby and Euripides arrive to help them with the preparations, including baking a large chocolate cake. Later they all join in the fun when the parents and the other guests arrive. The illustrations in particular are faithful to the brightly colored renditions of animals smiling in human dress in the original books. In fact, it seems likely that the illustrations are what will attract young children to linger over the book. The text and story are a little pedestrian. Reviewer: Mary Hynes-Berry
