Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“These converts, coming from varied backgrounds, converged on the Catholic faith because their intellects were enlightened by divine grace to accept its truth…They bring apologetics to life in an exciting way.”

-  Fr. Peter M.J. Stravinskas, author of The Bible and the Mass

“I’m privileged to know personally several contributors to Surprised by Truth.  Each is deeply committed to Jesus Christ; each relentlessly sought Him and was amazed at where he found him.”

-  Fr. Mitchell Pacwa, S.J., host of EWTN Live

“These eleven stories of conversion merge into a sustained argument for the truth of the Catholic faith. The converts’ anxieties, doubts, reasons, and affirmations are reported candidly – nothing is held back.”

-  Karl Keating, author of Catholicism and Fundamentalism and What Catholics Really Believe

“The apostles preached the Catholic faith regardless of the cost. These converts have accepted that faith – in each case at a great cost. What they learned is here distilled in a masterpiece of Catholic apologetics.”

-  Most Reverend Charles Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Denver, Colorado

“Conversion involves many strands of theological and personal struggles. Surprised by Truth weaves those strands in a tapestry of great beauty.”

-  Kimberley Hahn, co-author of Rome Sweet Home

I am a southern baptist, trying to see if I could find any merit in Catholicism. I am probably going to convert after some more research. This book shed light on things that I was unclear about my whole life. I am going to do further research, but Surprised by Truth is a wonderful place to start.

The stories of the Eleven authors were all very different but at the same time similar. They all spoke to the very essence of being a catholic and why. The book completely stimulated my desire to understand more deeply about my faith.

Madrid does a Great job explaining Protestant beliefs and misconceptions from a Protestant point of view. Most Catholics don't truly understand the bias' of other Faiths towards them. Patrick Madrid explains with the experiences and stories of several converts, how people of Protestant faiths are taught misconceptions and told not to question inconsistencies in their own faith. Using his own experiences and hours and years of research and soul searching, he backs up his beliefs with historical data and quotes from Scripture. My own experience of being raised Catholic and marrying a deep-faithed Baptist, has helped me to examine my own faith and to try and understand the differences in other faiths. 'Suprised by the Truth' is a great eye-opening book for anybody struggling with their Faith!

After reading the numerous convert stories I realized what a treasure we have as Catholics. To see all the struggles those converts had before they reached the Truth, made me promise never again to take my Catholic faith for granted. A must read!!

I absolutely devoured this book. I am a cradle Catholic and it helps me to understand more of my Catholic Faith, but it also reaffirms the passion I have for it. It is wonderful for those of us who have been Catholic all our lives to help us know how to respond wisely and respectfully when we are challenged by those from other faiths. So very interesting to have the point of view of someone who was once on the "other side". Very well done, an easy and wonderful read. I cannot wait to read the next two. For anyone considering entering the Catholic Church, please give it a read! It can answer so many questions for you, from folks who have been just where you are. It is SO worth it.

As one of only 2 Catholics in my office, I needed to hear about those folks who converted from other faiths to become Catholic. I wanted to read what they had to say about WHY they chose to convert. This was after several conversations with co-workers who find it necessary to get very defensive towards and somewhat aggressive in thier tone. It was as if I was " one of those Catholics" who was clueless and going to hell if they couldn't change my thinking/religion to anything other than being "Catholic". This book answered many of the questions I had as WHY the Catholic Church is THE church that Jesus founded over 2000 years ago and how non Catholics came to realize that this church, the Catholic Church, does indeed have the fullness of the truth.
