Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This fourth book in the "Humphrey the Hamster" series picks up with Humphrey and Og—the frog who lives in the tank next door in Mrs. Brisbane's classroom—facing a number of dilemmas. Mrs. Brisbane may well retire at the end of the year. Garth and AJ, two students in the class, don't seem to be getting along as well as they used to and another student, Heidi, just can't seem to remember to raise her hand and be respectful to others. To top everything off, Aldo the custodian seems to have disappeared and been replaced by an alien! Humphrey works throughout the book to solve the various dilemmas and mysteries that face him and his friends. Along the way, he learns a lot about geography, math, reading, and standardized test-taking. As always, the Humphrey books are offered up with a great deal of gentle humor and the expectation that young readers understand and appreciate the good a hamster can do on his weekend trips to students' homes. This is a fun and fast read for younger students, especially those interested in classroom pets. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.

Gr 2-4- Classroom pet extraordinaire Humphrey, a golden hamster, returns in his fourth novel. Spring has arrived, and Mrs. Brisbane's students are preparing for some important tests. Humphrey learns with them as they work on math problems and vocabulary words, which he records in his tiny notebook. He also engages in adventures like coming face-to-face with a cat named Sweetums, motivating senior citizens at a rehab center, and wandering the empty halls of school at night. Furthermore, Mrs. Wright, the whistle-blowing, rule-enforcing P.E. teacher, is out to get him, and he worries that Mrs. Brisbane will decide to retire. With his usual flare, Humphrey plots to help his humans overcome their problems. Each chapter ends with a definition from his Dictionary of Wonderful Words . Humphrey is a witty, fun, and lovable character with great kid appeal. This tale can be read independently of the previous novels.-Alison Grant, Ruby S. Thomas Elementary School, Las Vegas, NV

Fun to read and be read to

I purchased #1 in the series and read the book to first and second graders. They loved the story - both the boys and girls. I only read book one to them even though I have all 6 in the series. I highly recommend the Humphrey series. The children couldn't wait until Wednesdays when I came in to helpout and for me to start reading. Since I started later in the school season I only finished book one. Next school year I will start out with the Humphrey series and get to read more books to them. Please note that the first and second graders are in one class, so the first graders will have already experienced Humphrey. Also, some of the children went out and bought their own Humphrey adventures. HUMPHREY IS GREAT
