Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book is the latest in the "Art Revolutions" series and is illustrated with pictures of excellently presented surrealist works. Some are disturbing, as surrealism is often wont to be, but visually compelling nonetheless. The book begins with an overview of the birth of surrealism shortly after World War I. Surreal means "more than real" and artists were encouraged to paint their dreams and imaginings. The spread on Salvatore Dali is illustrated by three of his paintings, including "Slave Market with Disappearing Bust of Voltaire" which contains a visual trick allowing the onlooker to see either a group of people in a marketplace or the head of the French writer. There is also a spread on Man Ray whose photographs using new techniques went far beyond the ordinary realistic photos allowing him to create unusual works of art. This is a worthwhile book for the young student of art and should prove interesting to many of those who may not believe themselves drawn to the subject. 2000, Peter Bedrick Books/NTC/Contemporary Publishing Group, Ages 9 up, $16.95. Reviewer: Carolyn Mott Ford
School Library Journal
Gr 4-5-These titles give a brief overview of their subject before settling in on a short analysis of 10 leading artists whose works were integral to or had an impact on the respective movements. The masters are represented by two or three good-quality, full-color reproductions. The distinctive characteristics of each piece of art and its relevance to the movement are then discussed in a short paragraph. The paintings have been carefully selected to present an overview of the movement, and do not necessarily include the artists' most famous works. Sidebars shed meager light on additional aspects of Impressionism or Surrealism. Explanations are clearly written, enabling children to understand the complex theories. Students and teachers will appreciate the amount of clearly stated information in these books.-Ilene Abramson, Los Angeles Public Library Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
