Barnes & Noble - William Pearl
Jane Monheit and the bossa nova seem to be made for each other. Concentrating on ballads and standards that move to a Brazilian beat, the honey-toned singer finds a stylistic comfort zone that suits her suavity of phrasing to a tee. The same sureness of rhythm and gliding delivery that made Monheit a jazz star see her through this program of melodic jewels by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Henry Mancini, and Sergio Mendes, all set to a delectable tropical lilt. With tasteful string arrangements and contributions from Mendes, harmonica master Toots Thielemans, and Ivan Lins, Monheit has all the sensitive support she needs -- not that she can’t handle the show herself. The B&N Exclusive Bonus Track features Monheit’s languid treatment of Michel Legrand’s still-glistening chestnut “The Summer Knows.”
All Music Guide - Matt Collar
At once crisply assertive and lovingly sensual, vocalist Jane Monheit is the jazz equivalent of the young and charming grade school teacher you secretly nurtured a crush on. A sophisticated bombshell of a performer with a voice that is, like her appearance, voluptuous and flawlessly pretty, Monheit has garnered well-earned comparisons to such icons as Ella Fitzgerald and the goddess of vocal pop, Barbra Streisand. In that sense, her sixth studio album, Surrender, is, at first glance, not dissimilar from her past work. Recorded with her working combo including husband and drummer Rick Montalbano, Surrender is a ballads-heavy album that features a mix of jazz standards, reworked pop tunes, and several bossa nova numbers. What is different is the focus and presentation of Monheit. Rather than featuring her here simply as a singer fronting a jazz band, Surrender is a cinematic showcase, a Broadway-sized coming-out party that finds Monheit's voice framed against sweeping orchestration and glossy, Technicolor arrangements. This is Monheit the vocal diva, the superstar. [The Barnes & Noble Exclusive version of Surrender features an extra track, "The Summer Knows." ]

A blizzard of ballads, bossa nova and buttery saxophone.... This set can reduce listeners to an emotional puddle.

    absolutely fabulous!

Picked this up 4 or 5 days ago, so I've had opportunities for repeated listening. My initial impression was great and it actually gets better the more you hear it. Beautifully and carefully crafted. Well chosen and thought out tunes, totally inspired and pro musicianship. Dazzling arrangements and gorgeous, gorgeous singing. Bravo!

This cd is outstanding. If you are a romantic. This cd will be perfect for any lunch picnic in the park under a shade tree or on the patio on a warm summer night. You can't lose. If you have a multple disk player, put in Bebel Giberto'a cd also.
