Editorial Reviews

Abbie's Reading Corner

I loved this book! I could not put it down. The author does a wonderful job of taking history and writing a novel that draws you in. Again I loved how she wrote about God in this book. It was so real so powerful. I also enjoyed seeing Noah and Marianne again and how they played a small role in this story as well. Again I was drawn into what the people of that time must have been feeling as their capital city was burned.

A description-heavy story that authentically takes you back to the second war of independence. Characters are drawn with depth and sensitivity. A story of forgiveness, trust, hope and love.

Come Meet AusJenny

Another great book by M.L.

I love how the story plays out and when the book ended I was sad I wanted more of this story. It was good seeing characters from the first book in your series and seeing where they are now and what has happened to them. Some of the secondary characters in this book really add to the story. I cant wait for the last book in the series.

— Jenny Blake

Goodreads

I was so engrossed in this story, I was unable to put it down. This was one of the sweetest love stories I have read (and I read many!) I am looking forward to reading the next in this series, but these books are also fine as a stand alone.

RT Book Reviews

Tyndall writes with such vivid detail readers will feel a part of the action and romance as they experience a historical event they won't soon forget. The message that God uses the unlikeliest people to carry out His plans will resonate.

— Chandra McNeil

Sojourner's Journey

This Tyndall novel surprised me, because it was the first of MaryLu’s books not set at sea. While British Navel Lieutenant Alexander Reed (who we met in Surrender the Heart) played a pivotal role, the story remained firmly anchored on land.

The themes of seeing people for who they are, rather than for the labels that we hang on them, and of overcoming fear by trust in God despite difficult life circumstances found purchase in my life. And who doesn’t love a romance that develops against all odds?

— Rachelle Sperling

Vic's Media Room

This book is a suspense thriller as both Alex and Rose’s lives are in serious danger from the beginning. Don’t start this book late at night because it will be very difficult to put it down or stop thinking about it. I recommend this book highly and am greatly looking forward to the next book in the series.

    A Must Read!

I just finished reading 'Surrender the Night' by MaryLu Tyndall last night. It really amazes me how she can take an actual historical event and weave her own characters into the story, as if they were actually there! If you love history, romance, intrigue, heart stopping moments and life altering moments, you will love any of MaryLu's novels. She shows how God has a purpose for each of us in our lives, even when we perceive it as a day to day mundane life. You never know what is around the corner, what awaits us.........if you have ever felt alone and lost in this life, pick up one of MaryLu Tyndall's novels and get totally refreshed in your walk with God.....I did.

    Wonderful Read!

Rose McGuire lives on a farm outside Baltimore, Maryland, and during the war of 1812 the British come ashore. Previously assaulted by a British officer, she ends up taking in and caring for an enemy who protected her from another attack by one of his own crew members. This war is often referred to as the second American revolution. MaryLu skillfully weaves together a tale that had this reader rooting for this unlikely couple to be able to have a life together.
Rose is a delightful character with a very winsome way. This is one of the few MaryLu Tyndall books set on land for the entire book. She certainly can develop a wonderful hero (even if he was on the enemy side!)
Strong spiritual thread - this is an inspirational fiction. I liked the story so much that it was hard to have to sit down and think what to say about it. I love a book that pulls you into the story until the very end.
Great period details, which is to be expected since this is MaryLu’s primary area of research and writing. Lovely writing. Well done!

The Surrender to Destiny series keeps getting better!

Wow, what a read. This second book in the Surrender to Destiny series was such a great read! Compared to the first book, Surrender the Heart, I might just like Surrender the Night a wee bit better. Not sure why, I just found it impossible to put down! (Always an awesome sign! ;-)

MaryLu has a wonderful talent for crafting her characters and the perilous adventures they go through. While this adventure doesn't take place on the high seas (as is MaryLu's custom), she made up for it by making this a wonderful, romantic, and adventurous landlubber read!

My attention was easily grabbed from the very beginning and, as I said, it was just too hard to put down. I ended up staying up into the wee hours of morning, just to find out "what happens next"...which ended up meaning that I stayed up to finish the book! But even though I felt the hours of sleep I lost the other day, it was worth it!! Another awesome read by MaryLu!!

    I loved it!!!!!!!!!

The best book of the series (at least so far!). I thougth the first book, Surrender the Heart, would be my favorite, but this one actually outshines it!!! I absolutely connected with Rose and I found her very real. Her character was sweet, wonderfully written and I admired her very much. Alex Reed was another amazing character whom I totally loved. I found myself staying up well into the night, unable to stop myself from reading and reading and reading this masterpiece! All together, this was an AWESOME book and a must read!

    LOVE this book!

I seriously could not put this one down! The characters all clicked with me & the way this story feeds out of the former (Surrender the Heart; Surrender to Destiny book I) was so captivating & intriguing.

This is my 2nd favorite series of MaryLu Tyndall's. The first is the Legacy of the King's Pirates series. (The Redemption-bk1, The Reliance-bk2, The Restitution-bk3)

    Amazing

This is the best book by MaryLu! She is such an amazing author, and gets better the more she writes. This one is so different than some of her other novels, but they never fail to touch you. I liked the way the two main characters related to each other, and how God can create friendship among the worst of enemies. I have had all my friends read it, and they all love it! Good job MaryLu

I just finished reading this novel again and I must say that I fell in love again. The characters are so real, and so is their pain! Hard for anyone not to relate.

Very Highly Recommended!!! A must read!

If you are looking for exciting adventure, astounding historical facts, a sweet romance, and believable protagonists who grow as people, this is the book for you! Like all of Marylu Tyndall's books, Surrender the Night is impossible to put down, and it is one of my ultimate favorites. Set during the War of 1812 in a young United States, this story reveals God's power and reliability, even in times of war.

    I Also Recommend:

Great story of love and war by MaryLu Tyndall!

Rose is a shy farm girl living outside of Baltimore. Alex is a British naval officer sent onto American soil to gather information and plunder the local homes and farms. When he becomes wounded, Rose hides him and takes care of him. Amidst war, betrayal, and love, Rose and Alex must decide what they believe in and fight for it to the end, even if it really does mean the end... of their budding attraction, of their homes, or even of their lives. This is an amazing and exciting book, very different from any of MaryLu's other books, as it all takes place on land, and a lot of the story happens in one place - Rose's farm. That's not to say that it lacks adventure. Believe me, there is plenty of that! I highly recommend this book and the entire Surrender to Destiny trilogy.

    Enthralling....really!!

I won't rewrite this book in the review, but finally a book that I truly could not put down!! It was real and not filled with pretentious and unnecessary wording! Ms. Tyndale is a great author and makes you feel you are in the midst of all the action. If you don't read this book, you have missed it!! Oh, great romance, too...not silly and cheesy. Very real and very human!

    Romance on the high...land?

Book Two, Surrender to Destiny Series

    Baltimore, Maryland (1814)

With the British militia determined to claim American soil during the War of 1812, Rose McGuire has ample reason to despise the enemy. They killed her father, and thereby were also responsible for the horrors she endured after his death.

Living now with her aunt and uncle on a farm outside Baltimore, Rose is afraid of everything. The events of her life have defined who she is-an insecure girl who rarely leaves her home and is more comfortable with her horses, pigs and chickens than with people.

During a terrifying attack by a British sailor, Rose is rescued by British Naval Lieutenant Alex Reed. When the handsome enemy sailor is shot during the fight to keep her safe, Rose is honor bound to care for him until he can care for himself. Not even her aunt and uncle can know she's hiding a member of the British militia on their property. If he is discovered, Rose and her entire family will be tried for treason.

Hailing from wealth and pedigree, Alex finds conditions on the farm only tolerable at best. But as he comes to know Rose and her family and friends, he discovers some surprising truths about the things that truly matter in life, and the things that aren't so important, after all.

Despite Rose's bitterness against the British and Alex's contempt for Americans, the two find themselves drawn to one another, though any kind of relationship between them is utterly impossible.

    Or is it?

Set amidst historically recorded events, Surrender the Night is a gripping, enthralling romance that keeps the heart pounding, the mind spinning, and all five senses sharply at attention. It deals with serious, difficult issues and handles each of them with ingenuity and aplomb. Number two in the Surrender to Destiny Series, this novel is the first Tyndall book I've read that is set entirely on shore, despite the hero being a naval officer. The author's talents shine every bit as brightly on land as they always have at sea. She shows great insight into the difficult task of forgiving those who have terribly wronged you and brought chaos and destruction to your life.even when they show little or no remorse. It's about trusting God and knowing He loves His children, even when bad things happen to good people. Absolutely amazing, insightful, un-putdownable read!

Surrender the Night, Love,Forgiveness, Romance, Suspense

    My Review

Orphaned when she was a young child, most of her inheritance taken by her caretaker, and a horrible experience on the way to her aunt and uncle's, life hasn't been easy for Rose McGuire. She has lived at the farm for 5 years now, and loves farm life, and she makes the farm animals her pets. Being in midst of the war of 1812, it is not always safe being alone on the farm. British soldiers could attack at any time, and this is just what happened to Rose this one day in their family barn. Although Alexander Reed was there and saved her life, he was seriously wounded during the attack, so Rose had no choice except to hid him and nurse him back to health. Rose started feeling an attraction to Alex as she helped him, but then she hated him at the same.

Alexander Reed was a British 2nd Lieutenant and had no idea he would have to defend a young woman from his superior 1st Lieutenant Mr. Garrick, but he had no choice, it was either Garrick or the woman. Now he was here, in the enemy's barn, the woman having removed a bullet from his leg, facing death if he was found. Yet as the story unfolds, he was later forced to be hired by Roses family as farm help, and he grew attached to the love and family he never had. And Rose was a huge attraction as well, that just kept growing.

Surrender the Night, with the historical setting in the war of 1812 was filled with love, forgiveness, family, war, hate, romance, suspense, and patriotism all blended with a cast of characters that pull you into the story and make you feel as though you are right there with them. This is my first book to read of Mary Tyndall's; I can't believe I haven't found her books before now!! My heart went out to Alex, as he was trying to choose between a family that disowned him because he wasn't good enough in their sight and Rose, a young woman he loved and adored, with a family that treated him like one of their own. And Rose's grandfather was a great humble, wise gentleman, full of love, wisdom and knowledge for anyone that needed it. He was just a sweetheart! And I love how the author uses these characters to show that God is with us in each situation we face, even when we cannot feel his presence. And God can and will work each detail of our lives for our good and His glory. Just as Alex and Rose were at the right place at the right time, it is the same with our daily lives.

If you are a history buff and like historical fiction, run out and buy a copy of Surrender the Night by MaryLu Tyndall. You will not be disappointed. It will be well worth your read!

A huge thank you to the author MaryLu for providing me a copy of this book to read and review. I was not expected or required to write a positive review. The opinions in this review are my own honest opinions.

Brings History To Life With Love Amidst War

I was first introduced to this author by a friend. As history buff, I was drawn to this author by the fact that her books are historical fiction. As a Christian, I drawn to this authors because her books have a bit of romance written from a Christian viewpoint. I stayed a loyal reader of this author because I loved her style of writing as well as the intriguing stories she told.

SURRENDER the NIGHT is the second book in the "SURRENDER to DESTINY series. I love the way the author takes the reader into history in a way that history itself does not do. She takes the reader back in time. She introduces them to a new world through the eyes of fictional characters who adds a new dimension to the readers reading experience. The reader sees history not as just an event from the past but an experience with people who love, fight, die and live while history is in the making. This story gave me a new look on the war of between Britain and America. It puts the reader amidst the war with a woman and man who are on the opposite side. The couple find love in a forbidden place and time. I felt the pain, excitement and faith as the characters tackle their emotions, the war and the decisions they must make to find true happiness and faith in the Lord.

Although this book may be considered a romance book as well as historical fiction, it is not your normal harlequin kind of romance. It is real life kind of romance. It is romance with ups and downs and confusion. Real life kinda romance. The kind that is slow coming and slower for the two involved to realize they love each other.
I was drawn into this book from page one til the end. I did not want his story to end. I cheered as the characters overcame dangerous situations. I smiled as the characters found strength they did not know they had. I had tears in my eyes as the female characters were assaulted by the opposite sex in the name of war. I felt the strength and weaknesses of both the British and the Americans in a new light, through unbiased eyes. I loved this book and am anxiously awaiting book three of this series.

    Highly Recommended

What a great book. Love Historical romance and this one doesn't let you down...in fact it is hard to put down!
This is Rose's and Alex's romance. They had to learn to trust in God and by doing so they found each other. The story takes place when the enemy is on US soil. There are alarms sounding every so often to alert to the coming of the soldiers. I found some little know facts about the War of 1812 that come out in this book.
I was literally laughing out loud about Prinney the Pig...and of course Liverpool the Cow! Loved when she told Alex their names...after the Prince Regent of England, and Lord Liverpool the Prime Minister!!
I Loved Mr Drummond...Rose's Uncle...what a great character he was. Her Aunt Muria kept throwing Mr Snyder at her...and he was very interested in Rose. Enjoyed how everything worked out, and if it had me on edge, and couldn't put the book down.
Highly recommend this great read...you won't be disappointed!!
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from of Barbour Publishing. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Fede

A story that will capture your heart!

MaryLu Tyndall has done it again! This woman never fails to give you everything you could ever want in a good story. Romance, adventure, & drama its all there!

Sweet, young Rose McGuire hasn't had the easy life but she is finally well settled. Orphaned as a young child & taken advantage of by her caretaker, Rose flees with what is left of her inheritance & goes to live with her aunt and uncle in Baltimore where she finds a home. In the midst of a war Rose learns to look past her preconceptions, prejudices, & past experiences & realize that even in the midst of a storm God is always there. She learns to forgive those who have used & abused her & open her heart to love!

"Surrender the Night" is a tale full adventure, romance, & patriotism taking you into the heart of the country's capital during the war of 1812. It is another "must read" written by one of my favorite people. The "uber talented" Ms. MaryLu Tyndall!

    Great read!!

During the War of 1812, America is experiencing tumultuous times. So is Rose McGuire. After some trauma, she has moved to her aunt and uncle's farm and is trying to forget her traumatizing past. One night that past comes back to haunt her with a vengeance, and a man who is supposed to be her enemy swoops in and rescues her. Alexander Reed is at a crossroads in his life, trying to decide which way to turn. As these two form an unlikely friendship, they try to keep each other and Baltimore safe from a looming British attack.
I thought this was a great book, with lots of details to make the story come to life and characters that you care about. I also liked that the author brought back a character I was intrigued by in Surrender The Heart, Alex Reed. Because he was in that book, he gets into some sticky situations in this one, which kept me on the edge of my seat while I read. Hard to put down, be prepared to stay up reading! :)

Romance, Washington, D.C. Attack -- All In A Must Read Suspense Thriller

I had the privilege of interviewing M. L. Tyndall, on our radio show "Kingdom Highlights", for her new book, "Surrender The Night", Book Two in her, "Surrender To Destiny" series published by Barbour.

This series is dealing with the War of 1812 and this particular book begins in August of 1814. The War will last until February, 1815 so it is coming to an end but there is still many battles left before it does. The story begins in Baltimore on the farm owned by Rose McGuire's uncle. Alone on the farm she is in the barn when she is attacked by Lt. Garrick from Book One. Before he can complete his attack Rose is save by Lt. Alexander Reed, also from the first book. In order to save her Reed must kill Garrick but before he does Garrick severely wounds him. Now Rose must hide, care and treat the British Naval Officer which is a treasonable act as the United States is at war with Britain.

Rose and Alex grow during his convalescence and when the uncle hires Alex to be their butler the relationship grows even stronger even though they are supposed to be enemies. Rose is a woman who, basically, is hiding on her uncle's farm from a previous trauma and she doesn't even like to go to town. Alex is a sailor who ran away to sea to escape his family who finds himself drawn to this land and the farm life with Rose. Certain events transpire that bring Alex into Washington, D.C. and the home of President Madison. In an effort to save Alex Rose must put aside her fears and travel to Washington just as the British launch their devastating attack on the nation's capitol city.

There are some great themes in this book. Both Alex and Rose are emotionally deeply wounded individuals who can only heal by the grace of God and by their relationship with each other. Neither one of them can go forward and embrace not only their future but the destiny that God has planned for them until they can turn over their deep-seated hurts to God for their healing.

If you haven't read the first book you have missed a great treat. Ms. Tyndall knows how to craft a great story filled with action, suspense and wonderful romance. A bit of trivia for you this is the first book written by Ms. Tyndall that never takes you to sea, all the action takes place on land. However, don't let that steer you away as this book is plenty exciting and will have you reading and flipping pages as fast as you can. This book is a suspense thriller as both Alex and Rose's lives are in serious danger from the beginning. Don't start this book late at night because it will be very difficult to put it down or stop thinking about it. I recommend this book highly and am greatly looking forward to the next book in the series.

Amazing book by Marylu Tyndall-once again!

Once again Marylu Tyndall captured my heart as she wrote about Rose and Alex and their heart stopping story! I LOVE historical fiction and Marylu Tyndall does an amazing job of bringing real life events into her stories to make you feel like you were actually there! Every time that I dig in to one of her novels it makes me feel like I really did know what it was like back then! There was nothing that I didn't like about this book! From every aspect, this is one I was read again and again!

    Exciting!!

How does MaryLu continue to crank out these wonderful heroes and heroines? This story was full of suspense and romance. My favorite combination. I loved the history in this story, a war we don't hear a whole lot about, MaryLu brings to life. Rose is a woman who must overcome her fears, Alex is a man fighting his own wars. They are enemies and that proves to be one of the easiest hurdles for them to overcome. Tyndall has done a beautiful job developing these characters fully. They are three dimensional and interesting. The story moves along at a fast clip and never bogs down. It starts off at a jog and picks up pace the whole way through. I HIGHLY recommend Surrender the Night.

    Awesome!

I started this book one night and just could not put it down. The relationship between Rose and Alex is sweet, yet has a little of that luster for forbidden love as well. Very, very good book.

    A Wonderful American Wartime Romance!

I would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank you" to MaryLu Tyndall and her publisher for sending me a copy of "Surrender the Night" to review for them. I am truly grateful for this generosity. I really appreciate the time, effort and expense it takes to make a copy available to me as a member of MaryLu's Motley Crew.

I have never been in the position to have my home raided during a time of war by enemy soldiers. However, the gifted writing of MaryLu Tyndall takes me to that terrifying place where British invaders challenge American freedom and engage in violent oppression during the War of 1812. "Surrender the Night" is the second novel in the Surrender to Destiny series, and paints a vivid picture of war-torn America fighting to confirm her independence from England.

The stage is set to the extent that the reader can smell the smoke of burning buildings. Baltimore in 1812 was a precarious place to be, and Rose McGuire is absolutely in a precarious place. Her parents are dead because of the British. She is fighting off the advances of an undesirable suitor. The fate of her family rests in her hands if her Uncle should be killed during the British raids on her land. When Alex Reed, the Second Lieutenant aboard a British ship, saves Rose from being ravished by his superior, the story twists even further. Injured in the altercation, Alex is at Rose's mercy - and under her care.

You may remember Alex from the first novel in the series, "Surrender the Heart". His gallant character and torn loyalties were evident in that wonderful book, and it makes his character pop off the page in this beautifully crafted romance. I eagerly await book three.
