Overview

Many themes of modern Hawaiian history have their antecedents in a single historic episode---the mahele. In the 1840s, Kauikeaouli, or Kamehameha III, abandoned traditional Hawaiian land tenure in favor of the Western concept of private ownership of property, an event second only to the arrival of the Europeans in its impact on Hawaii. In a matter of a few years, Hawaii changed from a society in which the alii aimoku, or king, served as steward of the land that belonged to the gods, to one in which the alii, or nobility, and the maka'ainana, or commoners, acquired outright ownership of land. Surveying the Mahele examines the work of many important figures, including the few professional surveyors, whose work in Hawaii was as fine as any in the world. It describes the efforts of many missionaries who used their surveying skills to help their parishioners acquire land under the new laws, and notable Hawaiians who learned surveying from missionary teachers and applied their art during the mahele. The book is lavishly illustrated with examples of mahele-era land surveys that range in scope from single home sites to a plat of one hundred thousand acres.

Surveying the Mahele is the second volume in the Hawaiian mapping series Palapla'aina.
