Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Woo
This book is part of the "Difficult and Dangerous" series and explores stories of people who have been lost at sea and what they did to survive. The five chapters center on Captain Bligh, survivors of sunken ships during World War II, Thor Heyerdahl, Poon Lim, and Ellen MacArthur. Each story is fascinating and historical. Ellen MacArthur's tale of breaking the solo record for sailing around the world nonstop is especially inspiring to young girls. The treacherous challenges faced by some of the survivors will absorb any reader's imagination. There is some graphic and mature content about what some of the people had to do to survive, such as kill birds and eat them raw. The illustrations are detailed and engaging. Interactive elements include writing exercises, quizzes, and questions about "what would you do?" There is a glossary of terms at the end of the book, and suggestions for websites to visit for further reading. These stories of adventure, daring, and bravery are exciting to read and inspire one to think about what he or she might do in a similar situation. Reviewer: Mary Woo
