Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
In this story in the "Adventures of Riley" series, nine-year-old Riley receives a letter from his Uncle Max (a world?famous biologist) asking him to help discover why Pacific salmon are thriving while North Atlantic salmon are more endangered. In Alaska, Riley goes with his Uncle Max, Aunt Martha, and Cousin Alice to track the salmon. Riley learns that everyone has to wear bells to keep the bears away because the bears try to catch the salmon as they return from the ocean to their birthplace to lay their eggs. They fly to camp and begin their job of counting salmon to see if the population is growing or declining. His uncle explains that commercial over fishing, pollution, and dams are creating problems for the wild salmon. They are counting salmon with their uncle when they realize there are not many to count because up ahead, they see bears eating them. They do not know what to do until they hear a voice telling them to back away slowly. The "voice" turns out to be Jack Hanna, the animal expert and television host. Back at camp, they talk with Jack about the bears and the salmon's migration cycle. Riley goes home, but only until he gets the next letter from Uncle Max. Experts in science and biology provide more facts throughout the text. An illustrated chart explains the sequential steps in the lives of salmon. A "Further Information" page includes a glossary, a map and compass, and more information about Jack Hanna. A cartoon page explains how to get a Riley's passport on their web site. Photographs with artwork are detailed and fascinating. A lot of entertaining information is packed into this delightful and educational adventure.
