"There's a moment when it comes to amazing books... where you realize that the book you're reading completely and irrevocably owns you... [Surviving Raine] has that moment."
- Ash the Book Snob

As the captain of a schooner catering to the elite on the Caribbean Seas, Sebastian Stark does his best to avoid any human encounters. Interacting with people isn't his thing, and he prefers the company of a bottle of vodka, a shot glass, and maybe a whore. There's no doubt he's hiding from a checkered past, but he does well keeping everything to himself...

...until the night his schooner capsizes, and he's stuck on a life raft with one of the passengers.

Raine's young, she's cute, and Bastian would probably be into her if he wasn't suffering from alcohol withdrawal. As the days pass, DTs, starvation, and dehydration become the norm. Even the most closed person starts to open up when he thinks he's going to die, but when she realizes their traumatic pasts are connected, it's no longer the elements that have Bastian concerned.

He has no idea how he's going to Survive Raine.

"Shay Savage's website almost cockily proclaims that she writes "Fiction with Teeth". HA! Nothing cocky about the truth, my friends. I guarantee, that is maybe the *only* accurate way to sum up the dark, unsettling, exciting, unapologetic, fascinating, shocking, frank, graphic, primal, crude, sexy, at times horrific, consistently compelling experience that is Surviving Raine!!"
-Elizabeth (Sweptawaybyromance.com)

There are moments in Surviving Raine that will make you laugh, make you cry, and make your heart (and other parts) clench. This is one you will definitely want to put on your TBR list!

I wasn't sure how much I would like a story told only from Sebas

I wasn't sure how much I would like a story told only from Sebastian's point of view. I just didn't know if I would connect to Raine, not being in her head so to speak BUT boy did this book deliver! I definitely felt a connection to both of them. Although Sebastian didn't make it easy, I absolutely fell in love with him. He is rude and just downright mean at times but when he is good he is OH SO GOOD. The twist had me absolutely reeling. I can not recommend this book enough.

Best book I have read in a long time

This story was one of a kind for sure. Told through Bastian's pov. I was surprised how inrersting the book was for not having many characters in it. I couldn't put it down from start to finish it was great! Someone reviewed this saying they couldn't believe how fast they fell for each other and seriously I wonder if we read the same book. Because alot happened and was said before that happened. This book was intenese and not ur typical love story at all bit I loved it. Five stars across the board

EXCELLENT READ! So different from anything else out there, I really loved it! Am now reading the sequel, Bastian's Storm, and discovered there is a connection to the previous series, so I am going to go back and read that next. So glad I found Shay Savage!

This book had been on my TBR list for a while, but when the second book came out I knew I had to move it up the list. What a different storyline...very refreshing and oh, yeah you will totally love Bastian! “I give you my life, my love, my soul,” I swore to her. “As long as I’m breathing, I’m yours.”

    Wow!

This is not your boiler plate romance novel and to think I almost didn't read it just for that reason! Obviously I've got to start thinking outside the box!

This is such a good story. The writing is top notch and the editing is...well, there IS editing...how 'bout that? I can say enough about the story, it's edgy, sexy, funny, insightful, and down right compelling to read. I loved it.

    It was ok

I like that the story was told from the male's point of view. In my opinion, he cried way, way too often. I found it annoying. I didn't feel like a romance developed; He was mean, suddenly there was sexual tension, they're intimate, they're in love.

There was never a dull moment, so it was an interesting read. The epilogue set up intriguing possibilities for the next book and I'm curious to see what happens.

    Almost didn't purchase

Almost didn't purchase this book, but I'm glad I did. It is a beautiful love story completely from the male's perspective. Try something new and purchase this book. You will not be disappointed.

I devoured this book in a day! I was immediately drawn into Surviving Raine and I enjoyed that this damaged/tortured man story came with some twists. First, it was from the man’s point of view which I have found rare in these types of stories. Second, I absolutely loved the survival element of this book. Third, Bastian and Raine learn that a part of their personal histories are connected and this brings additional characters and a reason to continue the story via a sequel.

As referenced in the book synopsis, Bastian’s ship capsizes and sinks, leaving him and Raine in an inflatable lifeboat lost at sea. The risks that come with being without your basic needs added a whole other element to this story. Bastian has had a horrible life themed with abandonment, neglect, betrayal, endless violence, and a dysfunctional relationship with the only parental figure/mentor/role-model he has ever known. He has classic PTSD with the addition of “pit bull syndrome” (I use this term as it relates to Raine’s view of Bastian as a pit bull who has been trained for violence and needs rehabilitation.) Normally, Bastian would use alcohol to relieve his emotional turmoil but without access to alcohol, he has to find other ways to cope while simultaneously suffering emotional and physical side effects of detoxification. He’s moody and abusive, lashing out at Raine for a good portion of this book. Raine is an innocent, patient character who thankfully has the ability to set boundaries when needed. (view spoiler) My only complaint in this book was Bastian’s constant self-depreciation and emotional neediness. As the book continued, it became more repetitive. It didn’t change my enjoyment of the story as a whole but did make those particular sections feel a bit slower than the rest of the story. The author Shay Savage explains her writing style on her goodreads page as such: “I strive for characters that I find interesting. I want to be in their heads and understand what motivates them and why. You probably won’t like what they do, but my intent is for you to at least understand why they do it.” Ms. Savage succeeded in this book and it is now one of my favorites.

My favorite quotes (that I can repeat on goodreads lol):
“‘Don’t say that word!’ Raine cringed…‘Why not?’ ‘It’s foul.’ ‘So am I,’ I reminded her.”

“Your body can survive in amazing situations; you just have to convince your mind to do what you tell it to do.”
