Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
A daring biker jumps his motorcycle through a ring of fire on the cover of this book and teases readers to open it to discover a plethora of facts about surviving stunts and other amazing feats. The first double-page spread offers lots of interest with a picture of a human being shot out of a cannon. Students will be intrigued to find this event happened first in 1877 and that a fourteen year old girl did it. Many more exciting stunts are shown. Some include news about a man who swam across the Atlantic Ocean, a motorcyclist who jumped over twenty-one SUVs, and people who swallow swords, and breathe fire. A section on movie stunts is especially fascinating. The tightly written text also features acts of strength and mind over matter. Of special interest are the graphs that show martial arts records, escape and endurance records, water records, and records set by humans using machines. This book from the "Extreme Survival" series is written at a fifth grade level but will appeal to a wider range of students—consider it for reluctant readers and "high-low" settings. It contains a glossary, index, and up-to-date resources. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
