DOING RIGHT ISN'T EASY IN A WORLD GONE SO WRONG

Cass Dollar outlasted the fall of civilization. But surviving Aftertime requires the kind of toughness that can conquer the violent landscape of California and still retain its humanity.

When a young boy and his dying grandmother are brought to the Box, the survivalist community where Cass takes shelter, she realizes that without her help he won't be long for this unforgiving new world. But while the Box is a haven from the roaming marauders—and the flesh-hungry Beaters—it forbids children within its confines. The boy will be turned out to fend for himself. All that stands between him and the brutal wilderness is Cass's protective instincts, and the stubborn resolve that's gotten her this far Aftertime.

"Littlefield has a gift…page-turning action and evocative, sensual, harrowing descriptions.""

I first noticed Sophie Littlefield last year when her mystery ("A Bad Day for Sorry") was on the short list for winning the Edgar Award -- she didn't win, but that's when she first came to my attention. Then earlier this year, "Aftertime" was published -- a sci-fi post-apocalyptic zombie tale -- and it started getting good reviews. Quite intriguing for an Edgar-award nominated author to garner rave reviews in a different genre! It peaked my interest, so earlier this year I read "Aftertime". Very good. 4 out of 5 stars. Sophie Littlefield's descriptions are vivid. Of all the different zombie things I've read in the past couple of years (it's almost hard to AVOID reading about zombies!), this one got to me as no others had. Something about how Sophie described the "beaters" gave me the willies -- and kept me hooked. Although B&N describes this as "Aftertime #3", this 28-page novella is really set sometime after the first novel, "Aftertime." Call it series #1.5. "Rebirth," the second Aftertime novel, published earlier this week. Reading "Survivors" (while it may or may not draw new readers to the series) reminded me of how well Sophie Littlefield can write, and bumped "Rebirth" up the list from wishlist to an actual purchase (although I haven't read "Rebirth" yet). For those who are interested, Sophie Littlefield also has a teen paranormal series...

This is short story. However it was extremely well written. With solid attention to detail and development. Well done!

Just my kind of Zombie book. Good characters, plenty of scares and interesting story line.

This was an interesting short (a mere 28 pages) story that is about a boy and his grandmother who are found outside the Box (a camp of survivors who have not turned into zombies). The boy is quiet, but soon gets the attention of Sam (another survivor), but his future hangs in the balance, as no children are allowed in the Box. Read this to find out his story and see what happens!

This is a book that is part of a series. The series was great. I felt the gammet of emotions from fear and tension to love and laughter. These books were well written and easily pulled me into becoming invested in the lives of the characters, I also think it is cool that the heroine is as screwed up as the rest of us.
