Susan B. Anthony: Reformer

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In the series, "Spirit of America: Our People," this volume presents a short biography of Susan B. Anthony, a courageous and determined worker for women's rights who richly deserves to be known and studied. Although the publisher suggests an interest level for grades two to six, it's hard to imagine younger readers finding this book appealing or even very comprehensible. Period drawings have been tinted to provide a little color, the print is large, and the format spacious, but the parade of names of places, societies, amendments, and laws make it heavy going for young children. The photos of Anthony look grim and forbidding, while those of her fellow suffragist, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, were taken in old age. Images from the crusaders' younger days might have made them more accessible to children. Especially questionable is the use of a print (originally satirical, but offered here without explanation) to illustrate the 15th Amendment's enfranchisement of African American men, portraying the new voters shuffling along, while a white man clearly slips a bribe into one voter's pocket. Teachers may want to supplement the book's rather pedestrian text with something more lively; for example, Katherine Paterson's Lyddie to explain more about New England mill girls or Shana Corey's exuberant You Forgot Your Skirt, Amelia Bloomer on the controversy over the revolutionary but short-lived costume for women introduced in mid-century. A timeline, glossary, and bibliography are helpful, but teachers will probably find use of this biography limited to its suggested upper age range. 2003, The Child's World, Talcroft
