Farming of crops and livestock is the oldest human industry. Yet, as essential as they are to human life, modern industrialized farming practices threaten the destruction of the very agriculture they are supposed to sustain. Farmlands are depleted and surrounding areas polluted. Bio-diversity shrinks and, at the same time, over-use of land leads to depleted acreage that cannot recover. The effects are far-reaching and dramatic. How do we continue to produce the food we need to feed our world without destroying it? This question is the center of the problem of developing sustainable farming. Looking at how farms developed, why large, industrialized farms are unsustainable, and possible solutions for the future highlights the need for new farming technologies such as the delivery of water from sustainable sources for irrigation, environmentally safe fertilizers, and good land management. This book, one of the "How Can We Save Our World?" series, includes colorful photographs and sidebars with related information titled "Face The Facts" and "Perspective." Gr 6-8–Except for Transportation, which mixes problems and solutions within each chapter, these titles introduce issues in the first half of the book and then discuss solutions. Transportation also differs in that it has oblique chapter titles such as “A Return to the Rails” and “Across Rivers and Seas,” whereas the other titles assist researchers with titles such as “How Tourism Affects the Environment.” The writing in the books is adequate, though there are few in-text references to outside sources. Each title includes a couple of charts or graphs, and photographs on almost every page.
