Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Hazel Buys
The need to get from one place to another, whether for work, school, or recreation, is constant and growing, but our modern means of transportation are damaging our climate and our planet. Cars, railroads, and airplanes are all huge consumers of fossil fuels. These fuels are limited and their use pollutes our air with greenhouse gases. How do we keep moving without destroying our world? How do we build roads without damaging the surrounding countryside? How do we sustain our world-wide economy and industries with transportation that leaves a more neutral carbon footprint? These questions, as they pertain to the way we travel, are examined by looking at how transportation developed, why modern means of transportation are unsustainable, and possible solutions for the future. Possibilities include new technologies like sustainable sailing, the e-bike, changing the design of communities so that people can work and live within walking distance, and generally adapting transportation to be more environmentally friendly or "greener." This book, one of the "How Can We Save Our World?" series, includes colorful photographs and sidebars with related information titled "Face the Facts" and "Perspective." It would be an excellent addition to a middle-school library or class on transportation systems or environmental studies. Reviewer: Hazel Buys

Gr 6-8–Except for Transportation, which mixes problems and solutions within each chapter, these titles introduce issues in the first half of the book and then discuss solutions. Transportation also differs in that it has oblique chapter titles such as “A Return to the Rails” and “Across Rivers and Seas,” whereas the other titles assist researchers with titles such as “How Tourism Affects the Environment.” The writing in the books is adequate, though there are few in-text references to outside sources. Each title includes a couple of charts or graphs, and photographs on almost every page.
