Overview

How Can We Save Our World looks at how the idea of sustainable development is having an increasing influence on a wide range of human activities. The books examine the environmental costs and unsustainable nature of modern life, and discuss ways in which society can progress towards a more sustainable future.

Sustainable Water Resources describes the origins of the world's water and how we use water in our homes, industries, and agriculture. It discusses:

The pressures on the water supply today

How water shortages affect people's lives

Technological solutions for providing clean water and processing water

How we can use water more efficiently to ensure there is enough for all.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Hazel Buys
It seems stranger than fiction, but the amount of water on our planet is fixed. Less then three percent is fresh water. Only .77 percent of the water on earth is available for human use. Even if the total is measured in cubic kilometers—estimated to be 34,000 cubic km—the message is clear: water is a very limited resource. Supplies of fresh water are diminishing because we use it faster than the water cycle can replenish them. How do we get the water we need without using it all up? How can we distribute existing water fairly? How do we best conserve, renew, and protect our water supply? These questions are examined by taking a look at how water is used, why the amount of water needed to sustain modern life is increasing so rapidly, and possible solutions for the future. Solutions include using less water, cleaning water that we have used, and new technologies for harvesting water from new sources such as desalinization and fog harvesting. This book, one of the "How Can We Save Our World?" series, includes colorful photographs and sidebars with related information titled "Face the Facts" and "Perspective." It would be an excellent addition to a middle-school library or class on environmental studies. Reviewer: Hazel Buys

Gr 6-8–Except for Transportation, which mixes problems and solutions within each chapter, these titles introduce issues in the first half of the book and then discuss solutions. Transportation also differs in that it has oblique chapter titles such as “A Return to the Rails” and “Across Rivers and Seas,” whereas the other titles assist researchers with titles such as “How Tourism Affects the Environment.” The writing in the books is adequate, though there are few in-text references to outside sources. Each title includes a couple of charts or graphs, and photographs on almost every page.
