Overview

Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled series, returns with a brand new funny, romantic, sexy story!

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy and Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that—that, I know how to do.

This is the first book that I've read that was written by Emma Chase, but it won't be the last. This book had a fresh plot and excellent character development. I enjoyed the male POV. Very entertaining! This book is part of The Legal Briefs Series, and I will definitely be checking out the others. PSP

Sustained by Emma Chase (Audio Edition) Narrated by Sebastian York Legal Breifs #2 ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ This book was recommended to me and I am glad I picked it up. Jake likes to think he is such a badass…. I mean, he is… except when it comes to Chelsea and her bunch of rascals. With them, he just seems to melt into a big softie. He was always there for them when needed. The kids trusted and cared for him and he made sure they felt safe and happy. Which I loved. The way Jake handles the situations he found himself in were often laugh out loud funny. Although I haven’t read the first book in this series.. I may just go back and take a listen now! Sebastian York did a fantastic job reading this book. I will be adding him to my list of favourite Narrators!

This book is AMAZING! 10,000 stars. Top Emma Chase read to date. I listened to Sustained on audiobook and I'm so glad I did. I had my doubts going into this. Overruled was...not my favorite book. I couldn't handle Stanton Shaw. But...I LOVE Emma Chase's writing and I love Sebastian York's narration, so I thought I would give the second book in The Legal Brief's series a chance. I'm SO glad I did. Things I loved about this book: ~ Emma Chase is able to write such a good male POV. I don't even miss the female POV. Being in Jake's head is exactly where I wanted to be. The writing is such a great combination of funny, sexy and intelligent. I was quickly sucked into the story and invested in the characters. ~ Jake. OMG. I LOVE Jake. I love that he is honest (almost to a fault). I love that he is a bit of a jerk. I love that he is afraid he doesn't have what it takes to be in a relationship. I love that he can't turn away from Chelsea and the kids. Jake really made this book for me. ~ The kids. I was afraid that the kids would detract from the story. Let me tell you. These kids made the story even better for me. They were all unique, they all pulled on my heart for a different reason and I just LOVED Jake's reaction to them. I loved how he didn't talk to them like they were kids. Jake with the kids was completely swoon-worthy. ~ Chemistry. Seriously. This book had some HOT scenes. The chemistry between Jake and Chelsea, the way he is with her ... you may need a change of clothes. OMG! I loved every second. ~ Laugh out loud. Did I mention this book was funny? Yes it has some serious, somber moments. But this book made me laugh OUT loud while listening. I had my ear buds in and my daughter would ask me what was so funny because I just couldn't contain my laughter. ~ Mention of STD's. So often in books, the guy is a manwhore and the subject of STD's never comes up. Emma Chase did a great job of bringing up this topic and how serious it is. Much respect is due for authors that remind readers that it is a huge risk to sleep around. ~ Strong heroine. Chelsea rocked. She was strong. She was feminine. She was awesome with her nieces and nephews. She did not put up with any BS from Jake. Emma Chase created a great female lead character with Chelsea. What I didn't like about this book: Not a thing. Book like this one is why I read. From the first line I was hooked and I couldn't get enough until I read to the end. Bottom line: Sustained is funny, sexy, serious and captivating. READ THIS BOOK!!! I can't wait to read more by this author. Highly recommend the audiobook as well. Sebastian York nailed Jake's POV.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series Overruled, so I had pretty high expectations for Sustained, and those expectations were blown out of the water I loved this book so much more than the first one and that was all because of the lead character Jake, I adored his romance with Chelsea and his interactions with the kids, need I mention anything more than the One Direction concert which I found extremely funny, in fact any scene where Jake was out of his comfort zone was highly enjoyable to me. For someone known to never show any kind of emotion, and who was described as cold Jake was surprisingly delightful to have as the only point of view in Sustained, the change in his attitude and character throughout had me falling in love with him, the story drew me in from the first page and I couldn't get enough, I wish that the book was longer than it was, I didn't want to say goodbye to Jake, Chelsea or the six kids, I was just so absorbed, intrigued and utterly fascinated with all the goings-on. Also enjoyable was the frequent appearances of Stanton, Sofia and Brent, I love the scenes with the four of them all together, I'm extremely anxious to read Brent's book, I think it will be very entertaining, although it will have to be pretty spectacular to overtake Sustained as my favorite book of The Legal Briefs series. I seriously need to pick up Emma's other series, I really enjoy her writing and I want to fall in love with a whole new set of her characters, I highly recommend this series, especially this book.

After completely falling in love with Stanton and his story in Overruled, I thought for sure nothing would compare… but I was wrong. Just like Stanton, Jake was pretty cold, heartless, and overly conceited. Men that are just plain nasty at times are NOT for me. I’m not a fan of bad boys. I really expected to hate Jake, and at first, I really did. But into his life walks Chelsea, and he completed melted, causing my heart to melt as well. The jerk totally won me over. Jake – 1, Me – 0. “You’ve got this whole knight-in-shining-armor vibe going on.” I shake my head. “My armor was tarnished a long time ago, Brent.” “A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.” I was surprised but how much I enjoyed Chelsea and her chaotic family life. With her brother’s passing, she was awarded custody over her many nieces and nephews. Six, to be exact. Pretty overwhelming, if you ask me. Though she struggled with the discipline and supervision part at times, she really stepped up when her family needed her. Jake was the tough, hardass this family needed to snap them into shape. To see Jake become a part of that stressful picture was pretty shocking to me, and increased my respect for him. A man that steps up, even when it’s not expected of him, earns major points with me. This family gets into quite a few sticky situations. Though Jake helped when he could, (he is a defense attorney after all) he really had no desire whatsoever to become an actual part of this family. They’re not his family, they’re Chelsea’s. He’s interested in her, mostly on a physical level, but not interested in taking on the added burden of these six children. He’s way too self-absorbed for that. The hard part will be explaining that to Chelsea, and hoping she understands his position. Another fantastic addition to this series that is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. I thought I loved Emma Chase before, but my love for her continues to increase as I read more and more of her books. Her writing is so flirty, sexy, and full of fun and laughter. Her characters are always so relateable and real. And it isn’t only the main characters that are so important to each story… the secondary characters play such strong parts in the stories as well. We even get to see the prior characters in the newer stories as well, which is always a plus to me, and the main reason why I love companion novels so very much. If you like your book boyfriends to be of the smartass variety with a soft side, this is one you won’t want to miss. Brent’s story is coming up next in Appealed, which is set to be released in January 2016. These guys are the perfect group of love-to-hate men that seem to win me over. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
