Overview

All Christian White wants is a quiet life. But between the FDA threatening new regulations which would bankrupt his business, and the challenges posed by his open marriage to Carol, his attractive, younger, bi wife, peace isn't anywhere on the horizon. And when he receives a letter from Billy, his old chum and sometime guardian angel from their hippie days, asking him to come to London and help him to collect on a forty-year-old IOU, Christian's other problems start to look insignificant. Because the IOU is for two hundred and fifty kilos of charas, high-grade hashish from Afghanistan. And Christian owes Billy too much to even consider refusing.

About fifty pages into this book, the words "ripping yarn" came to mind. Not that there's anything old-fashioned about this tight, colorful tale about two old friends who embark on a last, crazy adventure to Afghanistan to retrieve a large shipment of hashish. The relationship between the two lead male characters (one a lifelong adventurer, one a former adventurer who's settled down but misses the thrill) beautifully captures the dynamics of longtime male friendship, and the woman that one of them loves (and who accompanies them on the mission) is equally vividly portrayed: strong, rooted, practical but up for anything. The book works in a lot of local color and detail, and sometimes the historical and political references packed into the dialogue slow the action down a little. But the book features several hair-raising scenes of suspense and action, and the ending (in which the fate of the whole operation is in the balance until near the very end of the book) is one that you won't soon forget.

Sutherland's Rules is a smart and entertaining global adventure! More than 40 years after a British hippie made a deal for 150 kilos of hash, the time has come to collect. Pursued by a bored civil servant who fancies himself the incarnation of Sherlock Holmes and attacked by warring Afghan militants, two old friends cross the globe to pull off the caper of a lifetime. Sutherland's Rules is a smart and entertaining global adventure. The plot is revealed through decades of intrigue and friendship. The relationships between the characters are touching and their exploits keep you turning the pages to find out what will happen next and you're wondering how or if they can every pull off their plan.

Mid-read review (not finished but had to share!) Although SR is not my usual genre, I have to say it hooked me from the very first sentence. Sutherland's Rules is a fast mover, a real page-turner. Dario does an excellent job bringing his characters to life and transporting you into the story. Stands firm as a 5 star read!
