Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
What sets this volume by the Queen of Lean apart from her previous, hugely popular diet tomes is that it actually instructs readers on how to cheat on the Somersize program and still achieve their weight-loss goals. It's an ingenious spin on dieting, and a wonderful way of recognizing that life is too precious to never allow ourselves those guilty pleasures we so enjoy. Somers' passion for life (and delicious food!) is never more in evidence than in this unique guide, which, like other Somersize books, also reviews the basics of the diet plan and offers great advice about nutrition, inspiring stories of Somersize followers, and tantalizing recipes.

Calorie Counting: Count Your Way Down, Then Back up the Scale

How many times have you stood in front of your closet and completely ignored an entire section of clothing? Before I discovered the Somersize solution, I would stand in front of my crammed closet and think to myself, "Someday I'll fit into my skinny clothes again." My clothes spanned three to four sizes: my super-skinny clothes, my normal clothes, my need-to-lose-five-pounds clothes, and my fat clothes. When an important event was pending, I would muster up the willpower to go on a strict diet to get down to that "skinny" outfit.

My diets always consisted of severely cutting down on calories -- adhering to minuscule portions of tasteless food. Or I'd eat diet food supplements like shakes or prepackaged food with the consistency of cardboard. I got results, but I suffered! I would lose the weight, but how I missed my dear friend, delicious food! How I missed preparing wonderful meals for myself and my family. (Well, c'mon, if I was going to suffer you don't think I could watch my husband, Alan, indulge around every corner!)

I would get down to my "skinny" clothes for the date I needed to look my best, and then I would go home and reward myself with a feast of all the glorious treats I'd been missing. I'd make roast chicken with gravy, mashed potatoes loaded with butter and cream, and vegetables tossed in butter and Parmesan cheese. And since I hadn't eaten sweets for soooooo long, I'd bake a sinful chocolate cake and devour two large pieces (plus a few extra forkfuls as I was cleaning the kitchen).

Of course, I would vow to get right back to a "healthy" way of eating so that I would not destroy all the progress I had made. I wouldn't stay on the strict diet, but I would try to eat balanced meals like a "normal" person. Before too long I'd find myself creeping from the skinny clothes into the normal clothes. I wasn't eating that much! Why was the weight coming back so fast? When I could no longer squeeze my way into my normal clothes I'd graduate to my need-to-lose-five-pounds clothes. Then I'd either start another diet or move on into my fat clothes.

The cycle continued, year after passing year. I was never obese, but once I hit 40, I seemed to have a constant battle with my weight, a battle that spanned about 15 pounds. I knew I was to blame. I had no willpower. If only I had the appetite of a bird, then I could always be thin. If only I could resist delectable butter sauces and chocolate brownies. If only I could survive on a starvation diet. If only I could devote three hours a day to exercising. But, no. I was lazy and without conviction, and my fat clothes and I would have to live with the consequences.

Now I realize I could not have been more wrong. I was not to blame. And neither are you. Ninety-five percent of us who go on diets gain back all the weight and often more. Why? Are we all just lazy slobs with no willpower? Conventional dieting in the past few decades has presumed that cutting calories and increasing activity level is the key to weight loss. We've all tried it and succeeded for limited periods of time, but cutting calories is only a temporary weight loss solution. It is also a potentially dangerous weight loss solution.

    26 pounds

I have lost 26 pounds in 3 months. I tried every diet, and walked 2 or 3 miles a day, with little results. This eating plan is effortless. I have more energy and look younger than I have in years. I recommend it to everyone!!!

    A truly healthy eating plan

Suzanne Somers finally discovers a way to help people with metabolism or weight problems. I've tried this plan and I think it is terrific, because Somersizing is NOT a diet, but rather a healthy eating plan for life. I am able to enjoy all kinds of real, delicious food. Highly recommended for whoever wants to try it.

    PEACE at last!!!!

I have read all 3 of Suzanne's diet books. I am 65 and had all but given up hope of ever losing this extra weight. I struggled with Weight Watchers for YEARS, and tried the Adkins diet which I found to be way too technical for me. But Suzanne's program is wonderful. I'm on it for 3 months now and have lost 15 lbs. It's slow for me, but I'm losing. And even if I didn't lose any weight I would continue to eat this way - because I FEEL soooo good!No more Zantac every night for indigestion. I have such a feeling of well-being. I finally feel at peace with my body. I'm not struggling at all. There actually is little effort. I eat a fruit when I get up, have my carbs breakfast about an hour later. Usually a good Cobb salad for lunch, a fruit in the late afternoon for a snack and a really good dinner. I'm no longer always thinking about eating.....and no problem with eating after dinner during the evening. I can't say enough good things about it. It works for me - like nothing I ever tried before. And no weighing and measuring. It's wonderful!!!I just want to tell everyone about it so they can feel as good as I do.Which I think is how Suzanne must feel and that's why she wrote her books!!! God Bless Suzanne! Eileen

    No deprivation

Low Carb diets have always worked to take the weight off of me...but I would crave fruit and eventually go off. This plan allows for fruit and gives me the freedom to be me. AND lose. I am just starting...so, wish me luck

    Doesn't Seem Possible!

I have been amazed at the understanding of this concept and it's ability to work from day #1. This also gives the incentive you need to continue. The concept which I have always understood, but having her bring it forward in this manner, makes it an easy read for all. I am 64 and all diets I tried before no longer work, metabolism change, that's it. This answers that call and shapes as it wisks away lbs. Thank you Suzanne, and I wish all the best for you, and for the health situation you are in, this way of eating is the answer for your body especially at this time. Judith M. Popolo

It Works, It really, really works!!

I bought Suzanne's book after my hairdresser had lent me a copy of hers. I was so impressed that I ran out and bought not only my own copy, but all of her other one's too. The first 10 days on the diet, I lost 7 lbs! I have to admit that I am not being totally strict on this eating plan, but I am still losing and have lost a total of 10 inches around my body. It is amazing and I tell EVERYONE about it. I had tried several other plans, and even going to the gym did not help, but this book did!! Three Cheers for Suzanne, keep up the great work!

I LOVED THIS BOOK BECAUSE IT PUT ME ON THE ROAD TO A PROGRAM WHICH HAD DELICIOUS FOOD AND YET I FOUND MYSELF LOSING WEIGHT. I NOW ONLY EAT FRUIT BY ITSELF. I HAD ONCE BEEN ON FIT FOR LIFE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AND THIS PROGRAM IS SIMILAR. IT NOT ONLY WORKSBUT MY SKIN LOOKS GREAT AND THERE WAS A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE WAY I FEEL. HAVING HAD A FACELIFE WITH DR. FRANK KAMER IN 1983 I HAVE BEEN VERY CONCIOUS OF MY FACE AND SKIN AND THIS PROGRAM ADDRESSES THE SKIN WHICH MANY PEOPLE MAY NOT EVEN BE AWARE OF/ I LIVE IN PALM SPRINGS AND THE SUN HERE CAUSES HAVOC WITH THE SKIN. I SEEM TO BE VERY LUCKY AND FOLLOWING THE SUZANNE SOMERS WAY IS THE ONLY WAY. LOIS J. SMITH PALM SPRINGS CALIFORNIA
