A Conversation with Suze Orman

1. Why do we need a special book for 2009?
Because 2008 was the year when decades of financial dishonesty came to a crashing end. Not just on Wall Street, but in American households too. Years of spending more than you could afford and saving less (or nothing!) than you need leaves you extremely vulnerable in 2009. Actually, it will leave you vulnerable forever, but if you don't start living with financial honesty in 2009, I am here to tell you that you are in for a very tough time. What you thought "worked" in the past simply does not cut it anymore. Credit card companies are aggressively cutting credit lines and increasing interest rates on accounts and mortgage lenders are pulling back on Home Equity Lines of Credit. Skating by without an emergency savings fund in 2009 is ridiculously foolish with unemployment soaring.

I am also very concerned that the stock market losses of 2008 will endanger the retirement security of millions of Americans. Not because of the steep declines, but because those steep declines are causing so many of you to pull out of stocks completely and invest all your money in "safe" cash or bonds. That is a huge mistake. Allow the events of 2008 pull you off of your long-term investment strategy and you will never reach your retirement goals.

I have to tell you that in my lifetime there has never been another single year where knowing the right moves you must make -- and avoiding the wrong moves -- has ever been more needed. These are scary times. I wrote this book to help you maneuver your way to safety and security in 2009 and every year forward.

2. What exactly is the goal of the action plan?
To break down every part of your financial life and tell you exactly what works in today's changed world, what doesn't work, and how to make the changes necessary to be safe and secure. From credit cards, bank savings, and retirement investing, to real estate, paying for college and finding ways to curb your spending, I walk you through exactly what you need to do. I cannot overstate my focus on ACTION: the book is a straightforward instruction manual on what you need to do now. I organized it so you can dive into any topic you are most concerned about. That said, I encourage readers to go through the entire book. There are new rules and wrinkles in every facet of personal finance, so even in areas you think you are in good shape, there is new information you need to be aware of.

3. Who should be reading this book?
Anyone who wants to make sure they are on the path to a secure financial future given the new rules of the road brought about by the financial crisis that began in 2008. Obviously, those of you who are struggling in any part of your financial life -- a mortgage you can't afford, a credit card interest rate that shot from 10% to 22% overnight for no apparent reason -- know you could use some clear-eyed advice. But I know from talking to thousands of you over the past year that even people who are in good shape are feeling confused and scared. You are questioning whether you need to make changes too. Not because of mistakes you have made in the past, but because the landscape is so severely changed. Each chapter in the book begins with The New Reality where I explain exactly why 2009 is so very different.

    Nothing you haven't heard before

I love Suze, but this was a waste of money, she gave the book away free on a website. Same stuff, pay cc's, build emergency fund, don't overspend. Go to the library and get her other books, it will save you $10.

Suze Orman Has a Plan to Get Your Finances on Track

This is a great little paperback (and very affordable) that will help you navigate the new financial obstacles you may be facing in 2009 and beyond. Suze writes with her tough love approach, and is very candid about saying NO when you have to. The book has situations and actions--for example, Situation: your daughter is getting married and you thought you'd have a huge wedding for her. Action: how to realistically plan a wedding that doesn't sink you immediately and in the future.

This is like "Eat This, Not That" for finances.

If it is hard for you to say NO to yourself or your children, you can make Suze the "bad cop." This is a great reference book that will help you assess your current state, and move forward with a real plan instead of fear or ignorance.

Suze Orman writes about complex issues, but breaks actions down into simple, doable steps for anyone.

Get a copy for yourself and one for giving away. Most of us will need this in 2009 and beyond.

    Suze has a plan!

Explains the housing crisis with vocabulary that makes it easy to understand. This is really good info for people that are starting out now. That includes both of my children in the young twenties. It gives them goals and a saving "discipline" to develop.

Sound Advise in an Unsound Economy

Well organized information for today's uncertain economic times. However, I wish I had some of this presented to me in this clear format twenty years ago! The book on tape is a good listening and learning tool from Suze Orman.

Great Financial Help in Audio Book Form!

This is a terrific (and very affordable) book on CDs that will help you navigate the new financial obstacles you will be facing in 2009. Suze Orman is reading the book on 4.5 hours of CDs. Four CDs, easy to carry in the car with you¿great for long commutes.

Suze has written this book with her tough love approach, and is very candid about saying NO when you have to. The book has situations and actions--for example, Situation: your daughter is getting married and you thought you¿d have a huge wedding for her. Action: how to realistically plan a wedding that doesn¿t sink you immediately and in the future.

She has a terrific analogy about the economy being like a gravely ill patient. The patient is now in intensive care and will eventually recover fully, but it will be a long, slow recovery. She graphically tells the grim story, but she also tells how to live with a new game plan for the next few years as the economy slowly recovers.

This is like ¿Eat This, Not That¿ for finances.

If it is hard for you to say NO to yourself or your children, you can make Suze the ¿bad cop.¿ This is a great reference that will help you assess your current state, and move forward with a plan instead of fear or ignorance.

Good gift for yourself or anyone. If you like to listen to her, buy the CDs. If you don¿t, then just buy the book.

This is good if you have lost your job and are in dire straits. I wish it had addressed how to adjust if your income has not dropped but the world is in panic mode.

I saw her on TV recently and she had reversed some of what was in the book. Finally addressing the problems that are happening to those of us who have jobs and are facing the actions of banks and credit card companies that want us to pay for their mistakes.

    Good Job; Good Info;

This is a great book, she really covered the waterfront on what to do on credit cards, retirement, the whole gamut of what you need to do. You can get a lot out of it by reading more than once, too; the advice is enduring. Great job, Suzie!

    Waste of money

Not for a reasonable person that has established financial goals. This is for the undisciplined with little or no money, deep in debt, and no place to go.

    Watch Suze on Oprah

If you have ever seen Suze on television then there is no real need to purchase book. Her theories are mostly common sense. She needs to write a handbook about how we can be better disciplined.

Good for people just starting out with lots of questions

This is a great book. It gave a lot of insight into how to save money, pay down your credit cards, short and long term planning ideas, etc.

One of the important things it talks about is credit and how companies view your credit. I found this really helpful.

If you are an experienced investor, this book is not for you. it's more for people just starting out or those trying to buy a home for the first time.
