Overview

Tenacious Suzy Goose aims to top her Christmas tree with a star from the sky — with unexpectedly wondrous results — in this vibrant, whimsical tale.

It’s Christmas Eve, and Suzy Goose and her friends are admiring their beautifully decorated tree. It’s perfect except for one thing: a star for the top. But Suzy sees just the right one, high in the sky, and no one can stop her from trying every possible way to get it! Bold, expressive illustrations follow the charmingly single-minded goose in a new adventure, a tale of seasonal magic found in surprising places.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
As Suzy Goose and her friends gather one evening around the decorated outdoor Christmas tree, they realize something is missing. The tree needs a star on top. Suzy sets out to find one. She attempts to get a star from the sky by flying, jumping, stretching, and walking. She just cannot get to it. What's worse, after these attempts, Suzy finds herself alone and lost. She hears familiar sounds in the distance and follows them until she is reunited with her friends. A Christmas miracle of sorts has occurred: a star is shining right above the tree. The mixed-media full color illustrations have a looseness to them that works very well with the text. Suzy's antics add a great deal of humor to the matter-of-fact and understated story. Her expressions range from happy and hopeful to cold, sad and lonely. Horacek has applied white paint over blue to make the cold-looking snow. Here and there are individual snowflakes for the reader to discover. With its lovely and nicely subtle message of the importance of friends and family, this is a good addition to the holiday bookshelf. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo

PreS–Suzy the goose and her farm animal friends have decorated a Christmas tree in the barnyard. All it needs is a star on top, and Suzy sees a perfect one up in the sky. She can not reach it no matter how high she jumps, and when she tries to walk to it, she gets lost in the snow. Luckily, with the help of her friends, she finds her way home. Meanwhile the star has magically moved to the top of the tree. Despite the lack of plot, young children will giggle at Suzy’s silliness and rejoice when she is reunited with her pals. The full-spread mixed-media illustrations depicting a textured snowy landscape against a starry night sky contrast with the friendly and determined figure of Suzy, with her orange beak glowing and her tiny eyes on the prize. Quiet and sweet–a fine choice for both storytime and family sharing.–Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library
Kirkus Reviews
Silly Suzy Goose. When she realizes the animals' Christmas tree is missing a star on top, she decides to get "that bright one in the sky." First she zooms down a steep hill, ski-jump style, to get aloft, then she jumps off a fence, then off a woodpile, all with the same predictable result: "Splat!" When she tries to walk to it, she just gets lost. Following the sounds of her friends ("Ding! Honk!") she makes her way home through the snow-to find a pleasant astronomical surprise. The slight story is enlivened by Suzy's customary silliness-children will enjoy knowing better than she does and voicing the sound effects-but her third outing shows signs of staleness, and the Christmas connection feels forced at best.
