First Chapter

The Swan Curriculum
Create a Spectacular New You with 12 Life-Changing Steps in 12 Amazing Weeks

Preface

"Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself."
-- George Bernard Shaw

The way I see it, life is about both.

Take the story of The Ugly Duckling. A homely bird is chased from his home, attacked, cursed, and rendered too neurotic to live until he throws himself at the feet of some passing swans screaming, "Kill me!" only to discover he has grown into a handsome swan himself.

I am the original Swan. About five years ago, I got stuck. By this I mean I crashed, burned, and got lost in the maze of life. Somewhere along the way, I had derailed from my goals and my values. Yes, I'm a television producer with my own company. I have wonderful friends. I make good money. Unfortunately, none of this mattered when I discovered I was pregnant at the age of thirty-five. My boyfriend of eight years was the ultimate fixer-upper and I had no intention of marrying him.

At the same moment that I realized I had to have this baby, I knew I had to let my boyfriend go and raise my child as a single mother. It was the most excruciating and confusing period of my life. It seemed absurd. I was a career girl. I didn't know the first thing about single motherhood. You see, I'm from a Catholic Latino background where such things happen ... to other girls. And I'd spent my life distinguishing myself from these other girls. From a young age, I made my career a priority, and it had paid off. I was sitting in business meetings with moguls. I created my own shows and television channels for a living. I always got exactly what I wanted, and yet here I was, in the playground, with a congregation of single Latinas, watching my child brave the slide.

How could I, a woman who seemed to do everything right, be raising a baby alone? I am having an out-of-body experience, I told myself. This isn't me. But it was me. And I knew that if I did not thrive in this situation, I would perish.

As a television producer, I am trained to research anything. So, I performed research on my most important topic: me. I located the best self-help experts in the world. I attended therapy and Buddhist silent meditation retreats. I went back to church. I met with Tony Robbins and took his seminars. I read book after book after book to learn how to find focus, flow, and fun in life.

I should tell you that I'm not someone who believes in gurus; I don't accept anything at face value. I'm not what you would call "new-agey." My studies paid off because I hand-picked the lessons that resonated with me. Reinterpreting the teachings for myself, I wrote hundreds of pages in my diary. In time, these writings developed into simple exercises and graphs, which I completed monthly to chart my growth and help me repair the areas in my life that were not working.

Before long, other career girls who were experiencing various types of roadblocks were calling me to ask about the workbook. I found myself giving it to stay-at-home moms, professionals, students, and any other women I came across who were looking to evolve. (Even men were asking for it!) Those who used the book claimed that it helped them switch careers, change their appearance, and find love, wealth, and self-confidence. As I heard of more and more success stories, I realized I needed to work in this area, that I needed to share my method -- I like to call it Swanning -- with as many people as possible. That's how I came up with the idea for the television show, The Swan.

The Swan Curriculum is a refined version of my original workbook. If you commit to the process, your perspective on your life will shift. Change, I learned from the exercises that follow, is about perspective, about seeing possibilities where you once saw roadblocks. When I confront something negative these days, the first thing I tell myself is that it can be fixed. The key is to turn negatives into positives. If I hadn't broken up with the father of my son, if I hadn't had doubts about motherhood, if I hadn't suffered a work-related breakdown -- in short, if my life had been easy and free of angst -- I would not have my son, who is without a doubt the best thing that ever happened to me. I would not have the show or this book. I would not have been pushed to take my company to a whole new level, where I have the freedom to do only those things that touch my soul. I would not be as in love with my life as I am every day.

A few years ago, I reread Hans Christian Andersen's Ugly Duckling story with my son. I was amazed at how well it captured this experience of being flawed in a world obsessed with perfection. Of course, we women don't just wake up one day to find that we have become what we always dreamed; like the ugly duckling, we sometimes need assistance. That is why I created the television show The Swan -- to help other women who are stuck. The show follows eighteen "ugly ducklings" throughout their four month commitment to self-transformation. During this time, they receive therapy, life coaching, fitness training, diet counseling and, yes, plastic surgery. Their transformations are amazing, but don't think what you're about to embark on is any less powerful. You have in front of you the very workbook I developed for my own transformation -- into the original Swan.

Becoming a Swan requires faith. And I don't mean religion. I mean the faith that you'll be taken care of in the universe if you do your work.

Welcome to The Swan Curriculum.
