Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
With its cream and blue ribbons tied tightly together in front, this toy book will sit on a shelf as if it were a book, but it is actually more of a working toy and quite complicated to unfold so that it becomes a theater for children to re-enact the "Swan Lake" ballet in miniature. Untie the ribbons on the front cover so it can open from the center to reveal a second set of covers, which also open in the middle and will pull outward to reveal a stage. At this point the toy book needs to be rotated so it stands up to allow the covers to stand together and support the stage. There is another sign inside the stage with a ribbon that says "pull down" and a paper banner across the top of the stage which says "lift up" and down comes the stage floor and up goes the proscenium. At the outside right, behind the stage, there is a ribbon and thin drawer can be pulled out. Inside the drawer are sheets of scenery that will fit into slits on the sides of the stage and nine dancers fixed to straws that can be inserted in holes in the stage floor. Also in the drawer is a booklet with instructions for playing with the stage and a CD that plays fifteen short passages of Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" ballet music. The information in the booklet is well presented, the music is lovely, the scenery is well-designed and the dancers twirling on straws is a great idea; but the idea of setting up the scenery and the dancers for each of the fifteen short bursts of music, stopping the CD between each musical passage to set up the next scene fifteen times, well, just thinking about it is exhausting and frustrating. Sadly, the whole is not as good as the sum of its parts. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
