Hitomi Beaumann isn’t supposed to live to see her 18th birthday.

Hitomi has always been just an average girl in a small town. But now she's being followed and her skin prickles every time the eyes are on her. After escaping a brutal attack thanks to a mysterious young man, she discovers he is one of the ones who have been watching her. Obsidian has jet black hair, red eyes and an attitude to match. As she finds herself drawn to Obsidian, she also realizes that he might just be as evil as he wants her to believe.

With someone trying to kill Hitomi and her birthday drawing closer, she finds herself plunged into a reality where a power struggle has been raging for years between mystical realms, humans are not the only beings and most of her life has been a lie.

Will Hitomi make it to her 18th birthday to discover secrets hidden from her? Will Obsidian be there to protect her or will he be the one to end her?

This is Book 1 of the Sweet Burden Series. Book 2 is scheduled for release the summer of 2012.

About the Author

K. L. Ogden aka Kristi Ogden was born in Ohio and grew up in the town of Wooster. Being that it was a pretty small town, the only thing that she had to do to occupy herself was to write stories about 90's rock stars with her friends. After high school she ventured out to Chicago to attend DePaul University where she studied Film and Foreign Languages. Upon her return to Ohio she started writing again, mainly writing fan fiction based on characters from Final Fantasy VII. It was around this time that her hair began changing color and graphics started appearing on her arms. Being a fan of Japanese culture, she got the bright idea to work on a manga with a friend. Her debut novel, Sweet Burden is the manga that turned into a novel. She is currently hard at work on book 2 of the series and she hopes to have it out in the Summer of 2012.

With so many young adult authors getting stuck in the rut of the same old vampire stories, it is nice to actually see a fresh story about a little bit different type of characters. I hate to give spoilers because part of the brilliance of the story is the way that the reader discovers the mysteries of the main character. It is the beginning of a series that could potentially be a very epic story of good versus evil, a great read if you are a fan of the young adult genre.

Fantastic book! I stayed up a few long nights just to keep reading it!
The characters are well thought out and the fantasy part of this story is very new and fresh. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the Twilight series. I'm excited to see where the author takes us next!

I’m not very good at reviews, but this book really warrants some accolades. From the first few pages I was hooked. The sweetness of Hitomi and the mystery of Obi really drew me in. I absolutely loved the characters. Following Hitomi and Obi through all the discovery and adventure is purely a roller coaster ride. I don’t want to give away any of the story, but the tension between Hitomi and Obi as their attraction builds is too much to bear at some points.
