Geoffrey Wentworth, the Earl of Stratford, is a war hero focused on affairs of king and country rather than affairs of the heart. Nevertheless, his mother is playing matchmaker and has invited potential brides to visit the family estate. Geoffrey resigns himself to playing host to a gaggle of husband-hunters more interested in his title than in him—until he unexpectedly meets one notable and intriguing exception.

Miss Liliana Claremont has no interest in being an earl’s wife, least of all Wentworth’s—the son of the man she believes murdered her father. Liliana is determined to find evidence of the crime, but her behavior rouses the earl’s suspicions as well as her own undeniable attraction to a man she thought was her enemy. As Geoffrey and Liliana explore their growing passion for one another, the truth behind their fathers’ enmity threatens to destroy their newfound love…

For full review including excerpt and dialogue highlight, please visit Reader's Edyn: ~~~ readersedyn (dot) blogspot (dot) com ~~~ Review: ~~~ I. Loved. This. Book. Ms. Snow shoots outside of the box in creating her characters and achieves magical results. Geoffrey is not what one expects of the higher class. He is determined to help those less fortunate, especially his fellow soldiers, and will use whatever influence he can to see his dream fulfilled. Liliana is no less unconventional. In her bid to become a recognized member within the scientific realm – a dominion that staunchly refuses to allow women a place within, despite her brilliance, she becomes more of an outcast than anything. She is obviously all wrong for an Earl with political ties, but that, oftentimes, makes her absolutely perfect as his match. And of course, both are opposed to being forced into conforming like the rest of their peers, so both have to overcome the protective walls resurrected before a chance at happiness is given the slightest flicker of a possibility. I love that Liliana is strong and capable, while obviously unaware of an obvious need for love an acceptance she tried hard to oppress. ~~~ Adding to the splendor of this story is intelligence and wit mixed with just the right amount of sarcasm. And the intellect demonstrated by both Liliana and Geoffrey is not overdone. The scientific facts, for example are kept to a level that allows enhancement of the story while maintaining the readers attention. The wit and sarcasm is utterly charming. One of my favorite paragraphs is Geoffrey speaking to his horse while thinking other thoughts to himself about Liliana, who is devastating his senses in every way possible by this time. He found a spot to rest the horses away from the crab apple trees. Grin nudged him in protest. “Much too much temptation over there,” Geoffrey mumbled, as much to himself as to the horse. “You, my friend, have an appalling lack of self-control.” As does your master. “And I have no desire” – to find myself married to a woman completely wrong for me – “to nurse a sick horse all the way home,” he said, patting Grin on the rump. ~~~ Throw in the bits of mystery and danger and you have the formula for this fresh, delightful novel. And … did I mention that the cover of this book has a quote from Julie Garwood? Julie. Garwood. People. I mean seriously. What more of an endorsement do you need? I can say for sure that I will be keeping an eye on Ms. Snow as I am confident she is an author to watch. Sweet Enemy is also part of a series: Veiled Seduction. Happily, I have discovered that an intriguing secondary character from the book, Aveline, will get his story in book 2, Sweet Deception, due out in August of this year. The reader is offered a glimpse into Aveline, but not near enough. My curiosity strings have been well and truly plucked. You can bet I will be reading that book for sure. Historical romance lovers are sure to enjoy Ms. Snow and her charming debut. ~~~ (ARC Paperback received from author for review.)

If you like historical romance this is a must read. When I finished reading it, I immediately came back to Barnes & Noble to purchase another one of her novels. Much to my disappointment there weren't any!

Sweet Enemy by Heather Snow Liliana had found some old letters behind the book shelves when she returned from asking others to help with the robbery at her home. The letters didn't make sense to her but it reminded her of her father's dying words: be trade (betrayed). Given the only clue was the wax seal on the bundle of letters that'd be a good place to start her search for the answer to who murdered her father. It was just by chance she and her aunt and cousin got an invite to go to the place where the seal came from. His mother was at it again, setting him up for marriage by throwing a party, using his seal to send the invites out, and hope he would find a suitable partner. She attends the ball at his house and finds herself going through the library looking for a spot in the shelves the same as what's at her library-the hidden shelf. But something happens and she ends up in his arms. They start courting... Sword fighting tournaments are just the thing to show off in front of the women. Her gunsman won the bet because of her knowledge of chemical reactions and the right things to add to the gun powder. Fascinating explanation of the plants they find and what they can do for the sick. He is in agreement with her as to the location of a new village after hearing all about the chemical reactions of things that could relate to illness in the new village. Was thinking with just 2 pages left I hope she gets to use her chemistry magic again to solve the mystery. And another book in the series will be out soon too, excellent read and can't wait for the next book.

A MUST READ FOR ROMANCE LOVERS!!! Geoffrey, the Earl of Stratford, is a military man, and ever since the war ended, has been looking for a way to get a bill passed, that would allow those brave soldiers to find jobs and have a safe place to live other than the streets. When he learns that his mother has planned a country house party, under his name, to find him a bride…he is furious. He refuses to marry yet, there is so much he needs to do and the last thing he needs is a woman he could never love or trust. Liliana Claremont, despite the pretenses, is not looking for a husband. Her father was murdered, and she believes the answers to his death will be found at Stratford. When she meets Geoffrey, and they become friends, her heart begins to soften toward him, but will the truth behind their father’s death destroy the love they have or fortify it? I was very impressed with Sweet Enemy, so much so that I couldn’t put this down and read it all this morning. Heather Snow is a new author for me, and I have really given her much thought until now. I have seen some rating and reviews here or there, but when I saw it available at my library, I jumped at the chance to try this author out, and I am so glad that I did. If her other books weren’t at my library, I would buy them, I loved this book that much. Heather Snow has risen to the top of my author list, especially when it comes to Regency Romance. Of late, I have become a bit bored with that genre, since it tends to be over done at times. But Snow wrote a story that utterly captivated me from the first page. The story begins with Liliana searching for any clues to her father’s death. Liliana (and what a pretty name), is smart, she is a scientist and a healer, and like her parents, wants to make a difference in the world, to honor them and their memory. She never expects marriage out of her life, because she only wants true love and trust, and most men shy away from her brains. Geoffrey, is a war hero, suffering from a back injury, a man driven to help those that fought for their country and came back to be sent to the streets. We have a love story that begins with friendship, and working together, to a passionate love affair, where desire drives them, and love is at the center. This story was so well done, and cheers for Heather Snow and her research. She cultivates this story with such wit and intelligence, with depth and she molds a love story that will endear you forever. I am sure I will remember this couple for quite a long time. I found the characters enchanting, and their love story was poignant, sensual and stimulating. A breathtaking new storyteller that is guaranteed to hold your heart!! A TRUE TREASURE OF A ROMANCE!!

This is a beautifully written debut and a fantastic story! Gorgeous writing, intriguing hero and heroine with hidden facets and depths, a layered plot with lots of emotion and feeling, and a wonderful portrait of a Regency country house party. The crisp and intelligent dialogue between Liliana and Geoffrey is some of the best I’ve read and it crackles with heat and spark. She is intelligent, witty, and smart, a chemist and a healer like her late parents. Liliana seeks the truth behind her father’s murder which leads her to Stratford’s house party with her aunt and cousin. The house party’s games on the theme of chivalry are spectacular, as it showcases both the strong-willed personalities of Geoffrey and Liliana, as well as their strong sexual attraction. She’s unlike any of the other women at the house party; she seeks a murderer and clues to her father’s death—not a husband. At first, Geoffrey thinks she’s out to entrap him in marriage when he discovers her in his library after dark, but he soon discovers they are kindred spirits. She fascinates him but she is not of his class, someone his harridan of a mother tries to steer him away from. But Geoffrey doesn’t want to keep away, and soon he can’t.  Geoffrey is veteran soldier, an aristocrat who saw the best and worst in men of his own class. He has modern views on the poor and, indeed, he longs to create jobs for those less fortunate soldiers who have stumbled on hard times after giving their lives for their country.  “He’d seen high-born men cut and run while the lowliest common soldier stood bravely until the end, and knew damned well that birth had little to do with one’s character.” (p108) But Geoffrey also wants a true and loving marriage, a partnership with a woman who will share his dreams, his goals, his love. Unlike his parents’ turbulent marriage where his father loved his mother more than she ever loved him. “…wasn’t his refusal to give his love so as not to be the vulnerable one in a marriage in the same league?” (p183) Liliana has an inquisitive and scientific mind. Her wager at the chivalry games is brilliant and exciting as it increases Geoffrey’s fascination with her, much to his mother’s dismay. Her body’s reaction to Geoffrey shocks and stuns her, and arouses her curiosity. She doesn’t want marriage but she does want to experience passion and sex. As a scientist, how can she resist exploring? This aspect reminded me of Pippa in Sarah MacLean’s One Good Earl Deserves a Lover.  The intricacies and social expectations of a house party are well portrayed here with the talents of the ladies paraded before Geoffrey for his reluctant choosing. Liliana wants no part of it yet Geoffrey singles her out, at first to assuage his pride and then because he can’t resist her. Secondary characters are extremely well drawn and interesting, too: Aveline, the charming and enigmatic neighbor who saves Liliana’s wager with Geoffrey but then raises her suspicions as well. His happy ending is in book two, Sweet Deception; the countess, Geoffrey’s mother, whose true ruthlessness is as subtle as it is deadly. I also very much liked Liliana’s sweet cousin Penelope, who tries to help Liliana find information about her father’s death. And Aunt Eliza, Liliana’s father’s sister who has hopelessly tried to raise Liliana into a proper lady, to no avail. Lots of loose ends promise stories to come. This is a truly wonderful story and I can’t wait to read the rest of the Veiled Seduction series as well as more from Heather Snow.

Liliana has dedicated her life to science, and now that she has evidence her father may have been murdered, she's going to investigate to find out the truth. The evidence leads her to the Earl of Stratford's family, so she wrangles and invite, along with her cousin and aunt,  to a party at his country estate. She plans to use the time to search for more clues and find the person responsible for her father's death. Geoffrey wants to avoid marrying anyone his manipulative mother has invited to this marriage mart, but he is unexpectedly attracted to the unconventional Liliana. He finds he can talk to her about his plans for helping retired soldiers with a bill in parliament, a mining operation, and even a village. All his plans would be made easier if he married a well-connected lady, but he finds the only woman he can open his heart to is Liliana. The mystery keeps you guessing, and the scientific nature of Liliana's education in the sensual arts keep you wanting more. But Liliana fears there is a murderer in the Stratford family, and Geoffrey is afraid to really lay his heart on the line. Can they each learn to trust the other to find the truth and to find true love?

A sweet romance I just finished reading Sweet Enemy! It is the first book in the Veiled Seduction series written by Heather Snow! What an excellent passionate love story! I really enjoyed reading this beautiful story of Geoffrey and Liliana set in Regency period. Sweet Enemy didn’t disappointed and I am sure that I will enjoy the next books in this series written by this newcomer author. Ms. Snow offered her readers a sweet romance. It’s a wonderful intrigue fill with mystery and passion! Geoffrey Wentworth, the Earl of Stratford, is a charming and handsome man. Everything starts as he has to attend a party that his mother is holding for him to help him find a woman suitable to marry and have an heir. While Liliana Claremont believes that someone in the Wenthworth family is responsible for her father’s death. Being a headstrong and an independent woman as a chemist, she decides to attend this party and get close to him, to be able to find clues that may help her find her father’s murderer. But little did she know that sparks will flare between her and Geoffrey. I won’t write a complete review, because others have done so very well. Ms. Snow is a new author and she very well described the chemistry between her characters. This romance was a page turner for me! I highly recommend this beautiful romance, evocative and emotionally rich with her characters. I will be reading more books by this author; her next book is Sweet Deception, already available and Sweet Madness, title will be released on April 2, 2013.

Another historical romance at its best. originally appeared on: Bookshelf Confessions Another historical romance at its best. Let’s talk about the cover: I heard that they changed it, I actually love the first cover although I can’t see Liliana’s face, but the blue dress and the gold background really did it for me. I fell in love with the book, the first time I saw the cover. From the very first page, I was hardly gripped by the story. I even checked it again if it’s really a historical romance, well, oh well, the very first page of Sweet Enemy depicts someone breaking in and Liliana’s been seen and caught by that person, thanks to her wits, she managed to escape. I really like the plot of this book. Liliana attending the House Party of the Duke while her ulterior motive is to prove that the Duke’s family has really something to do with her father’s death. And also, I’m not really an active feminist, but it’s good to think that even at that time, there are women who does not concern themselves with petticoats and gowns, instead with chemicals, formulas and theories. Like Liliana, I do believe that what men can do, women could, sometimes even better. Heather Snow make her characters unique and at the same time very relatable. I sometimes hate myself for agreeing with Liliana, and when the time comes for the Geoffrey’s (Duke) POV, I agree with him and hate Liliana for doing it. What makes me love Sweet Enemy is that Geoffrey and Liliana’s love story started with intrigue and scorching moment. It was never easy. There was suspicion, then mutual understanding, distrust..and many more.. I saw their love grow and developed in a not boring way. Also, there are a lot of information on the book, especially with healing plants, chemical reactions and even codes. Ms. Heather Snow, put her knowledge into this book, she’s a chemist.. One might never believe that this is actually Heather Snow’s debut novel. I for myself, am used already to her writing style, which keeps the reader going, revealing each mystery together with the characters. Plus humor and wits…I laughed most of the times…¿ This is a must read not just for historical lovers, but for mystery enthusiast too… An intriguing novel with characters that are anything but ordinary, Sweet Enemy would easily carve out a space into anyone’s heart. Highly Recommended!!! And would love to see more of this wonderful author!!!

Posted on Romancing the Book's blog Reviewed by~Joanne Review Copy Provided by~the Author This is the first book in the “Veiled Seduction” series and if the other books in the series are as good as Sweet Enemy is I will enjoy reading them too. I’m beginning to enjoy books that have prologues and epilogues since the first gives a hint of what is to come and the last ties up all the loose ends and hints at the future. Sweet Enemy didn’t disappoint by using that format. There was romance both sweet and not so sweet, mystery, betrayals, intrigue and family dynamics at work throughout. The book kept my attention from beginning to end with a lot of twists and turns to keep you guessing and invested in the outcome – some were predictable but many were not. There was a happily ever after that didn’t look possible but was what I was hoping for. Liliana had a hard exterior since she was a chemist in the 1800′s which went against everything women should be, do or act like. She had also built a wall around her heart after the murder of her father. Geoffrey also steeled his heart against being involved in any scenario or even feeling love. Watching the two of them fight their love which neither recognized and both doubted even when one would tell the other of it was handled smoothly. Their feelings ran the gamut from hate to love, from trust to betrayal along with many others and it was interesting to feel their emotions. The descriptions of the countryside, the parties, the house and their horseback rides were vivid and made you feel a part of it. I look forward to reading other books in the series as well as other books written by Snow. She will be added to my favorite author’s list. Favorite Quote: Liliana pressed her lips together in a smile. He may know more about relations, but he couldn’t feel how completely spent she was. And yet, she was intrigued. What if he were correct? She’d never get a chance again to test the theory. “What kind of wager, Major?”

I can not say this was my favorite book I've ever read, but it wasn't the worse. I thought the author could have done better if she cut the page count down.
