Overview

Sweet tea, corn bread, and soup beans-everyday fare for eight-year-old Alix French, the precocious darling of a respected southern family. But nothing was ordinary about the day she met ten-year-old Nick Anderson, a boy from the wrong side of town. Armed with only a tin of bee balm and steely determination, Alix treats the raw evidence of a recent beating that mars his back, an act that changes both of their lives forever.

Through childhood disasters and teenage woes they cling together as friendship turns to love. The future looks rosy until the fateful night when Frank Anderson, Nick's abusive father, is shot to death in his filthy trailer.

Suddenly, Nick is gone-leaving Alix alone, confused and pregnant. For the next fifteen years she wrestles with the pain of Nick's abandonment, a bad marriage, her family and friends. But finally, she's starting to get her life back together. Her divorce is almost final, her business is booming, and she's content if not happy -- until the day she looks up and sees Nick standing across the counter. He's back...and he's not alone.

Once again Alix is plunged into turmoil and pain as Nick tries to win her love, something she resists with all her strength. Only one thing might break the protective wall she's built around her emotions-the truth about Frank Anderson's death. But when that truth comes out and those walls crumble, neither Alix nor Nick is prepared for the emotional explosion that could destroy as well as heal.

I love this book. First, the blurb doesn't do it justice. This is a story of a Alix's journey through life. Allred's amazing storytelling skills tell us about her experiences, her trials, learning about love, friendship and deep heartbreak. It focuses on how real families live, cope and bond. It is more than a romance. The raw honesty of the characters makes it so much more than that. This is one of the few stories I will reread over and over and still cry. It grabs the heartstrings from the very beginning and doesn't let go. Even after the last page the characters stay with me.

When I started the Sweet Gum Tree I knew from the moment I read the first paragraph that I was in for an exceptional book, and I was right. The 1st person narrative of "Alix French," the heroine, was soothing with her descriptive, velvet tone of life in a small Arkansas town. Her story begins when she is 8 years old and meets the 10 year old hero, "Nick Anderson." Nick is from the wrong side of the tracks, with a disasterous family life of only a father, who is the "town drunk," and who arbitrarily beats him. Alix's family, on the other hand, is the kind of family Nick only wishes he could have; and when Alix decides to invite Nick to their church social, her "school-girl crush," is mightily established. As I continued reading, not only was I loving an incredibly written story, but I also started realizing that I was falling in love with the characters as well. The author pulls you in, almost without your knowledge, and you find yourself not wanting to stop. The development of each character was brilliant. Their association to the main characters only added a special warmth and understanding of, "we care what people think," small town, U.S.A. Towards the end of Alix's story, there were several times I wanted to shake her ever-loving head off! (It seriously would have done her more good rolling on the floor!) Her actions, unfortunately, threw the flow of the story off a bit for me, but not enough to heavily influence my 5 star rating. This is definitely a book in my top 5 favorites and even though it was a loan, I plan on buying it to have on my own shelves. It was simply an incredible read...

I wasn't expecting much from this book. It was a $1.99, and I only bought it based on the reviews because the excerpt wasn't too enticing. I started this book at 7PM and finished it within a matter of hours. I couldn't put it down. This is one of the best books I've ever read. You won't regret buying it.

What an amazing book from start to finish. This book should be on everyone's to read list-- amazing characters and the journey that each of them takes to get through live, love and loss. A true testament to love and forgiveness for the wrongs done to us as well as those perceived wrongs. Worth every minute spent of your life to read this book!

I just loved this book!! It caught my attention from the start- I could not put it down until finished. There was 241 pages on my nook. So romantic filled with twist and turns. The only problem I have with it is the book description page gives too much information. The reader shock factor would be much more intense if it did not contain so much of the plot. You need to read this one!!
