Overview

Pull A Fast One? Not On The Sisterhood's Watch. . .

There are some things that a group of gracious ladies just can't overlook—and doing one of their friends dirty is at the top of the list. That's the mission of the Sisterhood, seven women who would do anything to help out one of their clan, especially when it means righting a wrong. And Isabelle Flanders has definitely been done wrong.

Her former colleague, the conniving Rosemary, did everything in her power to ruin Isabelle, from framing her for a terrible drunk driving accident to stealing her husband and her architecture firm. Now, Isabelle's formerly lovely life is in tatters while Rosemary scoops up the spoils. It's enough to make any friend's blood boil. Rosemary may think she's flying high, but she's about to tangle with the Sisterhood. And when the Sisterhood is on the case, revenge is swift, delicious, and oh-so-sweet. . .

Praise For Payback

"Revenge is a dish best served with cloth napkins and floral centerpieces. . .fast-paced. . .puts poetic justice first."—Publishers Weekly

Praise For Weekend Warriors

"Readers who grow weary of seeing the bad guys get away with their crimes will enjoy seeing what happens when well-funded, very angry women take the law into their own hands."—Booklist

"An unforgettable story."—Rendezvous

Isabelle Flanders had everything: her own architectural firm, a fiance, a life she deserved. Until Rosemary Hershey came and stole it all. Took her career, her man, and even framed her for drunk driving killing three innocent people in the process. The loyal Sisterhood agree: Rosemary has to be punished. Isabelle has learned resilience and patience, but now it's time to do more than endure. It's time for justice.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

In Fool Me Once, 34-year-old pet photographer Olivia Lowell is shattered when a lawyer appears on her doorstep, announcing the death of her mother, whom she thought had died in childbirth. Further adding to Olivia's confusion and shock is the news that her mother left her a multimillion-dollar mail-order business, a confession, and a request that she anonymously return money stolen more than 30 years earlier to its rightful owner. The listener shares Olivia's frustration as she struggles to comply with her mother's wishes and come to terms with her life being based on a lie.

At some point, almost everyone dreams of seeking revenge, and in Sweet Revenge, architect Isabelle Flanders is no different. Several years earlier, a colleague and employee stole Isabelle's fiancé and architecture firm, then framed Isabelle for a drunk-driving accident in which three people were killed. Isabelle has finally regained her architect's license and is rebuilding her life as a single professional, but she has not forgotten what Rosemary did to her. With the help of her friends and their informal club, The Sisterhood, Isabelle arranges to have Rosemary's life come apart at the seams. Both programs, read by Laural Merlington, are professionally produced, with consistent volume levels, accent-free speech, and no background noise or tape hiss. Merlington, an experienced actor, presents a well-timed delivery with a wide range of voices that work well with both audiobooks. Of most interest to public libraries and Michaels fans; purchase where needed.

Kirkus Reviews
The Sisterhood takes on yet another evildoer in their endless quest to right wrongs against unjustly maligned women. Architect Isabelle Flanders's life was destroyed when her coldly ambitious employee Rosemary Hershey framed her for vehicular manslaughter and stole her ideas and her fiance Bobby Harcourt. Now the Sisterhood (The Jury, 2005, etc.) has devised a diabolical plan to help her get revenge and recover her reputation. Wealthy Sisterhood stalwart Myra Rutledge installs Isabelle in a luxurious office and buys a Virginia property to set up a bogus contest in which local architects will be invited to design a sumptuous horse farm, planning to make Isabelle and Rosemary the only finalists. Meanwhile, Bobby, long fed up with Rosemary's greed, sues for divorce, planning to start his own architectural firm. Rosemary, who's receiving anonymous letters reminding her that it was she and not innocent Isabelle who ran down and killed a family, is sinking into a funk as the Sisterhood increases the pressure. A rainy night in a cemetery, bogus snakes and a broken rope finally get Rosemary to confess and leave the Sisterhood ready to plot their next adventure. Michaels's fan base isn't likely to be increased by this improbable distaff pastiche of Mission: Impossible.

Meet the Author

Fern Michaels
Fern Michaels

Fern Michaels is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Fool Me Once, Sweet Revenge, The Nosy Neighbor, Pretty Woman, and dozens of other novels and novellas. There are over seventy million copies of her books in print. Fern Michaels has built and funded several large day-care centers in her hometown, and is a passionate animal lover who has outfitted police dogs across the country with special bulletproof vests. She shares her home in South Carolina with her four dogs and a resident ghost named Mary Margaret.

Biography

Born Mary Ruth Kuczkir in Hastings, Pennsylvania, Fern Michaels was married and the mother of five before she embarked on her long, successful writing career – a career that began with something midway between a challenge and a command. When her youngest child went off to kindergarten, Michaels's husband imperiously ordered her (in just so many words) to get off her ass and get a job. Long years in the domestic trenches had left her short on marketable skills, so she decided trade off her lifelong love of reading and write a book. Just like that. The domineering, unsupportive husband is history. And Michaels has gone on to pen bestselling romance after bestselling romance. Just like that..

With typical modesty, Michaels does not claim to be a great writer; however, she admits proudly to being a born storyteller. Her bulging bookshelf proves she is all over the map, producing with equal facility hot historicals, lighthearted contemporary capers, adrenaline-laced thrillers, and heartwarming tales of family and friendship. She is especially adept at writing stories about women who prevail in hard times – a reflection, perhaps, of her own struggles in her marriage and early career.

Raised to believe that the fortunate in life have an obligation to give back, Michaels devotes a lot of time to philanthropic concerns. She has established a foundation that grants four-year scholarships to needy students and has set up pre-schools and daycare centers for single mothers. She is also an avid animal lover and has been known to own as many as five dogs at a time.

In 1993, Michaels picked up stakes and moved from her home in New Jersey to a 300-year-old plantation house in Charleston, South Carolina. She and the dogs share the house amicably with a friendly ghost whom Fern has dubbed Mary Margaret. In addition to stopping clocks and moving pillows from room to room, Mary Margaret has been known to occasionally leave flowers on Michaels's nightstand!

Good To Know

Michaels confesses in our interview: "I'm a junk food junkie and a chocoholic. My desk drawers have more junk food in them than paper and pens. I chomp and chew all day long. At night I get up and eat Marshmallow Fluff right out of the jar. In between eating, I write."

Her first "sort of, kind of job" was in market research. Michaels recounts the gig's low-point in our interview: "I had a partner and we were testing a new pressurized drain cleaner. All you had to do was put this can in the drain, squeeze and supposedly the drain would open right up. It did, all right.

"The whole wall collapsed, and stuff that was in there for a hundred years flew everywhere. The lady didn't tell us the drain backed up to her kitchen drain and disposal. The company didn't care that we smelled like a sewer or that our clothes were ruined. The lady got a new bathroom, and we both got fired."

Michaels reveals some of her sources of inspiration: "Inspiration comes from everywhere. The title for Finders Keepers came from a cartoon with two chipmunks that my grandson was watching. I had a title but no story. I finally came up with one to fit that wonderful title.

"Names for characters sometime come from television. I had a character named Metaxis which is odd to begin with. There is a news anchor on T.V. who has that same last name. Sometimes it will just be a word someone says in passing, something I read or saw. There's no rhyme or reason to it. It's almost like, okay, I need something here, stay alert and it will happen."

    A great series

I still like this series. I love the idea of getting what they deserve although it is a bit extreme at times. I wish there was not so much language in it. I don't think it needs it. I will still read more.

    fun Sisterhood revenge tale

In Washington DC architectural circles, engaged Isabelle Flanders and Bobby Harcourt are the rising power couple as both are talented and successful. However, everything changes when Isabelle¿s assistant Rosemary testified in court that her boss ran a stop sign that killed a family who had the right of way. Stunned by the betrayal as Rosemary was the driver, Isabelle takes a second wicked blow when her employee steals her designs claiming them as hers. Strike three occurs when she loses her architectural license and strike four happens when Bobby dumps her and marries Rosemary. --- The Sisterhood knows a series of injustices have occurred with Isabelle as the victim and Rosemary the culprit. They begin a campaign to right the wrong starting with getting Isabelle¿s license reinstated and obtaining clients for her. The second phase begins: to destroy Rosemary. They secretly let the media know the identities of Rosemary¿s lovers and begin sending her mail telling her they know the truth about the vehicular homicide. Bobby knows he made a big mistake when he dumped Isabelle for Rosemary. --- The plot is implausible, but fans of the Sisterhood series will not care once they as judge and the JURY decides that the VENDETTA is just and PAYBACK is now. Rosemary is a nasty villainess who has gotten away with every dirty trick until now. The Sisterhood is moving on as they still struggle with loss and new personal relationships. For fans of the series only as Isabelle savors SWEET REVENGE. --- Harriet Klausner

book is not that good this time--Fern got lazy

Fern Michaels falls down a lot in this book--it feels like a rush job, and it's a letdown when you read it, compared to the ones in the series before it. If I'd read this one first, I'd never have picked up another in the series. Looks like she uses a ghost writer or got in a hurry, on this one, and the next one in the series. Problem is, once you were hooked on the series, you didn't want to miss any. Too bad, and if you skipped the others, don't bother with this one.

    Rosemary for rememberance

For those of you not into botany, the bouquet on the hardcover of Sweet Revenge , Isabelle's story, is rosemary --'for rememberance,' as Shakespeare said. And Isabelle has a lot to remember about Rosemary, now that it's her turn to seek justice. Interestingly enough, the unlikely-named Rosemary Hershey is one of the most memorable villians in this series so far. Not likeable, but memorable. She doesn't speak, she snarls, she screeches, she barks -- at one point, reading this made me think about Animal Control taking her away (just kidding). The head games played upon her were fascinating to watch this is the first up-close look at a Sisterhood villain we've ever seen, and Rosemary's mental deterioration is definitely something you won't forget in a hurry. To round out the book, the group is still dealing with the loss of Julia, at least one member is considering a career change, and there's an interesting out-of-left-field development in Yoko's private life that gives new insight into her character. The ending is interesting, and you can see what might be the beginnings of an auxiliary branch of the Sisterhood.
