Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
This delightful tale introduces youngsters to the first day of school using likeable characters Angel Cat Sugar, Parsley, Thyme, and Basil. Excitement rules as the friends gather their school supplies. Supplies include Angel Cat Sugar's new lunch box, Basil's new shoes, Parsley's new notebook, and Thyme's new backpack. They think about worries that little children can relate to before the first day of school. Some of their worries include how they will keep from getting lost, if they will have fun, and whether the teachers will be nice. The biggest problem arises when they get to school and discover Parsley has lost his new notebook. A friendly librarian, art teacher, lunchroom teacher, gym teacher, and music teacher all help the friends look for the lost notebook. In so doing, the friends get to see all the rooms in school. A satisfying conclusion is reached when they get to their own classroom and discover the teacher found Parsley's notebook outside and saved it for him. This level two book is geared to the developing reader and introduces readers to new vocabulary and longer sentences than previous levels. It contains a Lexile score of 380 with only 414 words. Colorful, engaging illustrations add to the text. Young readers will be happy to find that they can read much of this book independently and relate to the situations involved.
