Chapter One

Present day

Her whole world at the moment consisted of warm sun and cool sand, the gentle shush of the tide. Palm fronds rustled in the breeze behind her, and before her lay nothing but blue ocean and the calm, straight line of the horizon.

She'd come here to relax. Unwind. Escape.

No, wait--not escape. Where had that come from?

She'd come here to prepare. Yes, that was better. It was a . . . transitional period.

The period when she would transform from her normal, fun-loving self into someone's wife. But not just someone. A respected attorney. Who was also an investor--"gifted at it," her father said--and thus had more money than God.

She hadn't the faintest idea how she was going to be that kind of wife--the kind who hosted garden parties and Sunday brunches, the kind who could hold a glass of wine in her hand all evening at a cocktail party without ever getting tipsy and giggly. Kat was fairly famous among her friends for "tipsy and giggly."

But those days were behind her now--they had to be. Hence the transitional period, the sun and the sand. It truly was tranquil here. Her father had only bought the private island off the Gulf Coast of Florida last year, so they hadn't made any improvements yet, but once she and Ian were married, maybe she'd suggest they make a gift to her parents--perhaps a new beach house, a new dock for the boats. People said money couldn't buy happiness, but Kat knew better. Nothing would make her father happier than a shiny new beach house, courtesy of his daughter and new son-in-law. She could almost feel his smile beaming at her already.

A vision flashed in her mind--her, in a few years, as a mom, corralling a little boy and girl on this same beach. The children were adorable, exploring, occasionally picking up a sand dollar or a broken bit of shell. They all wore light colors, whites and pastels. She and the little girl sported straw hats and flowy sundresses. Somewhere in the distance, her father and Ian grilled steaks and drank martinis while her mother festooned a picnic table with brightly colored place mats and arranged peach-colored napkins in a fan shape to bloom from stemmed glasses.

Why did such a lovely image make her want to throw up?

She liked kids, after all. She spent each and every Saturday afternoon with kids at The Kiln, teaching them to throw pots. A messy and sometimes semidisastrous pastime, but pottery was her passion. She loved sharing it with children who weren't as fortunate as she'd been and who needed a distraction from the harsher realities of their lives.

And she liked steak and martinis and decorative napkins, too. Who didn't?

So what was wrong with this picture?

She sighed, thinking.

It wasn't that she didn't want to be married. She did--she always had. Sure, everyone thought of her as Crazy Kat, party girl extraordinaire--but deep inside, all she'd ever really wanted was commitment, someone to build a life with, a world with.

And she loved her parents, and she loved Ian's parents, and you really couldn't find a guy who was more respected or even better-looking than Ian. He was a catch--everyone said so.

So that settled it, once and for all. There was nothing wrong with the picture.

She was simply going to suffer a steep learning curve in terms of being a sophisticated wife, that was all. And really, it shouldn't be that much of a stretch--she'd been masquerading as a sophisticated daughter all her life and gotten by okay. And Ian didn't love her because she was sophisticated--he loved the real her, even the party her. He'd once told her that. So this was all going to be just fine.

A damn good thing given that the wedding was only seven days away.

The trill of her cell phone jarred her from her thoughts as she plucked it up from the sand next to her lounge chair, then mentally prepared herself to lie in case it was her mother, expecting to hear the sounds of slot machines behind her. "Hello?"

"Viva Las Vegas, baby!" No, just her lifelong best friend Nina--and it was Kat who heard the whirring sounds of electronic gambling in the background. "I'm coming to you live from Caesar's Palace!"

"So you guys made it in okay," Kat said, envisioning her five best buds partying without her in Sin City.

"Yeah, and--" Nina stopped, just briefly. "Oh. My. God. The hottest soldier in the entire Roman army just walked by!"

"Down, girl," Kat said dryly, at once sorry to be missing the fun but at the same time so removed from it that it didn't matter--she had bigger things on her mind.

"In a few minutes, we're going to walk over to Treasure Island and try to pick up some pirates. Swarthy ones, with scars. God, I can't believe you're missing this, Kat. Honestly, if I live to be a hundred, I still won't believe you actually bailed on your own bachelorette party." Nina let out a long, slow sigh, and then--if Kat wasn't mistaken--took a slurping sip from a beverage undoubtedly high in alcoholic content. "Are you sure you won't change your mind?"

"Too late now. I'm here, and you're there."

Nina's voice dropped so that Kat could barely hear her over the sounds of the slots. "No. I meant about the wedding."

Now it was Kat's turn to sigh as her stomach twisted. Why couldn't Nina just let this go? She was marrying Ian, and that was that. "Would you please drop it already?"

"You don't love him."

Here we go again. "Of course I love him. I've known him my whole life."

"I've known you my whole life, but that doesn't mean I'm marrying you. You know Ian's not pendant-worthy."

Continues...

    Great read!!!

    Review by Jen:
Kat loved Brock when she was a teenager and he broke her heart... not once, but twice. So ten years later on the eve of Kat's wedding when he wades in from the sea onto a beach occupied only by Kat, she's going to need to keep her senses to keep from being swept away by Brock.

Brock is in the middle of a mission and doesn't need any distractions. But when he discovers Kat on a private tropical island, he decides that a little hot and sweaty fun might be in order since they are stranded. And he's not about to let her engagement to a man she doesn't love stand in the way of making up for his past rejection of her.

I could not put this book down. I was drawn in from the first page, which happened to be a flash back to a teenage Kat on her high school graduation day. I enjoyed the characters and the situation Ms. Blake placed them in. The isolated tropical island, a couple bad guys hunting down Brock, a little suspense and a red-hot romance make for an intriguing story. I think my only complaint is that I figured out who the mastermind criminal was almost from the minute he was introduced. Granted he wasn't the smartest criminal, but it would've been nice to have been in the dark a little longer. That said, this one thing did not diminish my enjoyment of the book. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on my books from Ms. Blake and highly recommend this one.

Swept Away **wouldn't we all like to be!**

This book is amazing. I fell in love with it from the first chapter.
If you have ever lost a love and carried it with you through the years, this is the book for you.
Katrina is one week from her wedding, marrying someone she is not truly in love with. Brock is her first love, and the man who (went away.) Kat goes to her families island to get away and think and guess who washes up on shore. The story is very dramatic and exciting. These two have a ton of issues to work out....when you think this can't end well, love wins out. Definitely one I will put in my library and read again! We all dream of being Swept Away at some point in our lives!

    Don't Bother

I love Toni Blake but if you are expecting this book to be like any of her others, think again. The story line was too predictable. I guessed the ending by the second chapter. To much going back and forth between the charcters and if he called her "kitten" one more time I was going to gag. Sorry to say I couldn't even finish just skimmed through until the end. But I am not giving up on Toni. I love all of her other books and strongly recommend them. Just not crazy about this one.

    Really cheesy

The dialogue is really cheesy. I did a lot of eye rolling at the language. The together then not together dynamic happens way too many times and became very frustrating.

    Sexy Bad Boy!

Love this book! Brock is such a great character that I didn't want the book to end. I love reading about a bad boy who meets his match, and this book is sexy with a capital S! Toni Blake is always a witty, clever writer and the dialogue in Swept Away is top notch. There's adventure, humor, and well-written hot romance. I couldn't put the book down and can't wait for this author's next book.

    Breathtaking!!!

Swept away is a fast-paced, passionate, sexy romance, not a suspense novel, although there's ample suspense to keep you turning pages. No one can concentrate on figuring out plot twists when you have Brock and Kat's sizzling romance to take your breath away! It's easy to see why the majority of reviewers and readers rave about Swept Away, it's entertaining, passionate, well written, face-paced and fun! I highly recommend it, you will be swept away too!

    Slow Moving

I'm not sure I read the same book the other reviewers did. This book does not deserve 5 stars. The storyline was good and the characters were developed well but it was SO SLOW. I kept putting it down because I was bored with it. It was also obvious early on who the bad guy was which ruins it for me.

    You'll Be Swept Away

Katrina ¿Kat¿ Spencer has taken a little break from her hectic wedding plans and has gone to her parents privately owned in order to transition from who she is¿to who she thinks she needs to be. Gone will be the party girl and in her place will be a pastel wearing, sedate lady. Can she help it if she still dreams of a pirate whisking her away from it all? So, when she awakens from a nap and a half dressed god walks out of the surf¿she first thinks that she¿s in a dream world but when the god speaks and it¿s a voice from her past¿she knows otherwise. What on earth is Brock Denton doing on her island¿and why is her heart beating way to fast? This man hurt her once before and she is not about to give him a second chance of doing it again. But, when danger follows Brock and he protects her as a knight should¿it becomes harder and harder to say no to the one man she has always wanted. Is this really their second chance at love and will they survive in order to see their happy ending? This red hot read is beyond entertaining! It¿s action packed and so sensually written you will be able to feel the sexual tension she builds between her main characters. Ms. Blake is an awesome talent and once again has created one of the hottest hero¿s in print today. Brock and Kat¿s romance will keep enthrall until the final page. This is one read you must add to your summer reading list! You will be ¿Swept Away¿ for sure!

    a reviewer

Her wedding is less than a week to a nice person who Katrina Spencer sadly reflects that she does not love. Needing time to think, she flees to her family owned island to decide whether she should break off her engagement or not especially since she does not want to hurt her fiancé, who deserves the best but she is also concerned about what she needs.----------- Dozing on the beach, she is awakened when FBI uncover agent Brock Denton scrambles ashore. She does not have to be a nuclear scientist to know that Brock has brought trouble to her haven. Not only does she still remember his searing kisses from their last encounter, but feels no man including her future husband compares to him. However, Brock has brought more than just sexual danger to the woman he has never forgotten. His cover was broken and he fled with smugglers wanting him dead. He fears he brought his danger to ¿Crazy Kat¿, but also is frightened by how much he desires her. Passion and danger ignite as they flee his pursuers, but can this be love or just the heat of the moment?--------------------- This torrid romantic suspense thriller is at its delightful best when the lead couple shares intimate interludes. However, the suspense subplot of the smugglers in pursuit relies too heavily on coincidence starting with the first and only acceptable entity of Brock landing on Kat¿s beach. Still the lead couple is fun to follow as they struggle with their sexual desires and the need to fight or flight. Toni Blake provides a fun tale.----------------- Harriet Klausner

    For your sensual reading pleasure!

When Katrina ¿Kat¿ Spencer makes a solitary escape to her father¿s private island one week before her wedding instead of going to Las Vegas for her bachelorette party, the last person she expects to appear, right out of the ocean mind you, is Brock Denton. Brock is the bad boy that Kat attempted, and failed, to seduce on the night of her high school graduation. Shortly after that night Brock unexpectedly and inexplicably left town and had never returned. Brock is the total opposite of Kat¿s fiancé, Ian Kat has been having second thoughts about marrying Ian, and seeing Brock again after so many years makes her question the impending nuptials even more.***** Brock can¿t believe his eyes when he swims ashore and spots the grown up Kat, his ¿kitten,¿ looking even more beautiful than she was ten years ago, something he wouldn¿t have thought possible. Brock had good reasons to leave town, reasons he had never shared with Kat and still would prefer not to share. He isn¿t the bad boy any longer, now an FBI agent who narrowly escaped an undercover operation gone wrong just before washing up on Kat¿s island.***** When Kat and Brock act on the decade-old attraction between them, Kat needs to decide whether she will go through with her wedding. Any decision she makes will greatly impact her future as well as that of her family. Brock makes a startling discovery while on the island, one that places the security and success of her fiancé and her father in his hands.***** Toni Blake has given readers yet another wonderful romance, complete with more than a bit of burning sensuality, just the right amount of action and suspense, and a handful of secondary characters that add realistic touches of family and friends. A satisfying side story delves into the troubled relationship of Kat¿s parents and is a very nice touch. Flashbacks into Kat and Brock¿s past successfully define the circumstances and heartache that helped mold them into the adults that they have become.***** It is easy to recommend SWEPT AWAY to readers of sensual romance, you will not be disappointed.
