Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michele C. Hughes
Dora's going to the beach, but her monkey friend Boots does not want to come along because he cannot swim. Dora assures him her mermaid friend can teach him, so they set off with Map to guide them. Along the way they encounter the Flying Fish Bridge and the Silver Sand Dunes. Dora's trusty Backpack helps them with the things they need during their trip. As in the other "Dora the Explorer" books, Dora incorporates basic Spanish words in her narrative—including colors, numbers, and short phrases. These words flow easily in the story to naturally teach the reader some simple Spanish. Dora asks the reader to participate in the story by saying, "Backpack!" or by choosing which item she needs from an assortment of options. A maze page in the sand dunes part of the story invites the reader to help the travelers find a way out. The illustrations are vivid and cartoonish, and there is a lot to see on every page. At the end, Boots' swimming lesson with the mermaid is an accurate three-step description of how to swim, which may help a reader who is a reluctant swimmer. Reviewer: Michele C. Hughes
