Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverly Kobrin
Nancy White Carlstrom's Swim The Silver Sea, Joshie Otter is a wonderfully soothing nap- or night-time read- or sing-aloud that will lull little ones to sleep and simultaneously introduce them to Alaskan coastal wildlife in the process. Joshie swims by seals pups, walrus calves, puffins, Kitiwakes, and murres before night falls and his mother's voice guides him home. Once you've sung Ms. Carlstrom's original melody, it will seem you've always known it. Youngsters will enjoy adding original verses to the two given.
School Library Journal
PreS-- The oft-told scenario of a child who wanders away from its mother is given a fresh look because of its Aleutian Island setting. In his search for a playmate, Joshie Otter swims past some seal pups, walrus calves, puffins, kittiwakes, and murres before he hears the comforting sounds of his mother singing him home. ``He followed that song/over waves in the night/ on the billowy deep/ through the silver moonlight.'' Soft, lovely blue and gray colored-pencil illustrations with occasional splashes of purple and green cover the double-page spreads. The tune takes the form of a lullaby as it appears on a spread of yellow moonlight shining down on the blue ocean as well as on the last page with the accompanying music. An excellent addition to picture-book collections that's sure to be read over and over by parents looking for that perfect soothing bedtime story. --Mary Rinato Berman, New York Public Library

    Great Lesson Book

Swim the Silver Sea, Joshie Otter written by Nancy White Carlstorm teaches a good lesson. Joshie Otter was told not to go and play, but he does not listen to his mother. Joshie Otter spends the afternoon looking for friends to play with, the seal babt pups, puffins, kittowakes, and the murres, but they all had something else to do. As night fell Joshie Otter realized he had swam out farther than he had expected. Joshie Otter listens close and hears his mother singing a song to lead him home. His mother says "Swim the Silver Sea, Joshie Otter." Joshie Otter listens and fallows his mother's voice home. <BR/>This book is very well written. Joshie Otter learns a great lesson. He learns that listening to his mother's is very inportant to his safty. Because Joshie Otter gos out looking for a friend to play with he gets lost. With this book a teacher can teach the importants of listening to the rules of an adult because without rules something bad can happen. I really like how the book included the song Joshie Otter's mother sings to guide him home. Students love music, and it is a good wrap up to the book. Over all I feel this book is good to use with students.

    Wonderful toddler book!

My daughter adores this book. Not only is the story intriguing to children,it also includes music in the back which is easily played on the piano or guitar. A good bet for introducing your children to sea life in Alaska.
