Children's Literature
For nonswimmers and beginners alike, this book provides an excellent introduction to the sport of swimming. Beginning with a brief overview of swimming, the following fourteen chapters discuss pool rules and safety, swim equipment (suits, caps, goggles, nose plugs and fins), poolside warm-up exercises, basic strokes, diving, competitive racing and pool games like Marco Polo. From getting wet to actually taking the plunge, the clear directions and many straightforward photographs and drawings take the beginner through all the steps necessary to become a swimmer. Breathing, floating, and dog paddling as well as basic strokes (crawl, breast, back, side and butterfly) are described and illustrated in an easy-to-understand manner. Appropriately the authors place considerable emphasis on pool rules and safety. This book is an excellent choice for parents (who choose to teach their children themselves) and for instructors to share with children who are ready to get in the swim. 2003, Crabtree Publishing Company,

School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-Excellent introductions to the basics of each sport. Each title discusses equipment, warming up, safety, and technique. Skating covers gliding, skating backward, carving turns, crossover turns, and stops. Swimming discusses everything from floating and treading water to the dog paddle, shallow diving, and several strokes. Clear, color photographs and drawings of children or teens participating in the sport offer step-by-step instruction and demonstrate correct form. The two-page chapters with short, descriptive sentences and colorful, illustrated side boxes will appeal to young readers. Rick Cross's Superguides: Swimming (DK, 2000) is also a solid choice for this audience. Attractive and informative how-to guides.-Diane Olivo-Posner, Long Beach Public Library, CA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
