Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Shelly McCoy
Although swimming is something that most of us do at some point in our lives, very few of us know what it takes to be a professional swimmer. As part of the "Sports Science" series, this book provides an introduction to the sport science of swimming. It covers a range of topics from pool science to swimming gear to the different types of drag that affect a swimmer's body. The information about specific skin suits mentioned in the chapter about swimming gear will quickly be out of date, but the general description about what they are being designed to do is useful. This book also includes sizeable information about the science of the four strokes in professional swimming: the crawl, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly. Additional information is learned in each short chapter, with text boxes that showcase a quick fact, a "look closer" at a topic mentioned in the chapter, and "new words" which gives the definition of a word bolded in the text above. The book uses colorful and flashy graphics and backgrounds, text boxes, and different fonts to keep some young readers interested in reading further. Others may be put off by the busyness of the pages. There are many ways to successfully incorporate this book into the science curriculum, especially in discussion of the forces of water.
