It's 1937, the Great Depression, but also the beginning of the Swing Era of Big Bands...and women wanted to play the music: singers, drummers, pianists, trumpet players were forming all-girl bands to hit the ballroom circuit just like Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey.

Ex-burlesquer Rita Ramone forms the Swing Sisters and the group moves from smoky hotel ballrooms to the cavernous sound stages of Hollywood. This is their story: Sara on piano, recovering from a painful divorce, former Vaudeville headliner Roz, on drums, hiding a secret desire, Tonia, playing a New Orleans trumpet, who can never share her forbidden love, and beautiful singer Lovey Anderson, aching for her lost child and torn between her dangerous passions for two men.

Three years in the writing. Originally published by Scribners and rights optioned for a movie and Broadway musical.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This hefty saga of an all-girl emsemble struggling to make it during the Big Band era is bogged down in subplots and melodrama. (Jan.)
Library Journal
Westin, whose previous novel Love and Glory ( LJ 2/1/86) was a World War II story of women in the WAACs, uses the same formula here to convene a cast of diverse women musicians in the all-female jazz band called the Swing Sisters. Songbird Lovey spends her life running, first from her evangelical preacher husband and later from her jealous mobster lover. Pianist Sara is recovering from a painful divorce and turns to lesbian drummer Roz for solace. Trumpeter Tonia, carrying a torch for her forbidden black lover, falls into the netherworld of drugs. Despite the melodramatic plot elements, one-dimensional characters, and trite dialog, the background of jazz and swing music in 1930s New York City is interesting, and plenty of sex should make this a popular potboiler.-- Marcia L. Perry, Berk shire Athenaeum, Pittsfield, Mass.
