Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
National Geographic, like others who publish early readers, has made it easy for kids who want to learn more, earn prizes, play games, watch videos, and take quizzes by linking to the Internet. For those who have smartphones (presumably parents of the young audience), there is even a code to scan on the back cover to activate a video. The “dear parents note” reminds them that kids are curious and want to know about the world around them. Reading leads to vocabulary development and triggers a thirst for learning. In this Pre-Reader, kids learn about some of the animals that live in the rain forest. Since this is a “National Geographic Readers” series publication, the quality of the colorful pictures is outstanding. Readers learn that it rains in the rain forest and thus trees and plants grow very tall. Also there are animals that live in these trees as well as on the ground. Readers meet a three-toed sloth, then a Borneo Pigmy elephant, a golden bamboo lemur, baby jaguar, snakes, birds, monkeys, butterflies and more as they read. A map near the end of the text shows the various rain forests in the world and identifies where each of the featured animals lives. There is a picture quiz for little ones with answers on the rear cover. This reader is a wonderful introduction to rain forests and is just right for kids who are ready to read. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot; Ages 4 to 6.
