Children's LiteratureSoccer is a great sport that can be enjoyed by boys and girls. The "Soccer Cats" series has been created to appeal to all those soccer players. Each book features several of the players and real life problems. In this chapter book Ted and Lisa are twins. She is a star scorer on the team and he is a fullback who never seems to be in the limelight. He is envious of his sister and really down in the dumps because she seems to be the one who gets all the cheers and praise. When the coach teaches them a new technique called switching, Ted decides that this is his chance to be a star. Instead he makes a bit of a fool of himself and is even more frustrated. To make matters worse he decides to be mean to his twin sister. She, on the other hand, realizes what is wrong and works with the team captain to give Ted his chance to be a hero. It all works out and the brother and sister are once again good friends. The stories present positive messages and should resonate with the target audience. Black and white sketches are sprinkled throughout and add humor in their depictions of kids with slightly exaggerated facial features. Number nine in the series that still bears the name of Matt Christopher. 2003, Little Brown, Ages 7 to 9.
